Did Washington Just Have an Actual Weekend?

February 22, 2021 at 11:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard

New York Times: “Since Mr. Biden assumed office, the weekends have been portraits of domesticity — MarioKart with the kids at Camp David, bagels in Georgetown and football in Delaware. A Peloton devotee, he doesn’t even play golf. Mr. Biden’s demonstrable uninterest in generating audacious headlines only emphasizes how much the Trump-size hole in Washington has created a sense of free time in all realms of the capital. Psychically, if not literally.”

“Though the workload remains (this is still Washington, after all) people are grabbing a few more hours of sleep in the span of time formerly known as the weekend.”

Yeah, okay, this was 5 and-a-half years ago. Champ was probably a little livelier then.

It will cost taxpayers some money. He'll have to use a helicopter or a motorcade to get to the course. Even if he only plays at Andrews and Camp David, or his country club(s) in Delaware, it'll cost.

Presidential travel is expensive, even if he's just going to church or to a theater (someday). The motorcade and associated road closures have costs.

It's not exactly "bilking" the taxpayer, it's just a cost of doing business.
