(6,795 posts)Oh why? How valuable is the hive that demands their daughter expire flitting desperately from one damaged, putrid bloom to another in a ceaseless task, stealing enough nectar to honey-feed the gaping mouths of inbred larvae? The votes, The votes, alas it's the votes that cost this bon vivant its soul. And that one, too. And there, another. There is no righteous one, not any.

(13,862 posts)He gives us a Democratic seat in one of the 10 most Repub states in the nation. His presence made Schumer the head of the Senate.
As long as he votes with us 50%+ of the time, I see him as an asset.
Politicub
(12,165 posts)I dont disagree that hes an asset and serves an important purpose.

(9,109 posts)Then we could afford to be more particular as to who we have in our ranks. This last time our senatorial candidates lost in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Maine, North Carolina, and other states we thought wed pick up.

(3,374 posts)know how to deal with dissenters, Democrats need to do the same, there are many subtle ways to do it, they need to find one to put Manchin in his place to cooperate.
I have been saying this about Manchin, and I got beat up for saying it, but people need to understand that Manchin, at least to me, is a republican in disguise.

(19,148 posts)when anyone badmouths Manchin, but he just flat out pisses me off, so sorry about that. As far as President Biden's agenda goes, Manchin might just as well sit on the other side of the aisle.

(58,785 posts)and Manchin is the choice of the MAJORITY of voters of WV.
Remember democracy, majority rule? That people who live other states get to vote for their OWN representatives but not impose their choices on other states?
We're all of us either pro-democracy or we are anti-democracy along with the trumpists. There is really no middle ground, as in "pro" when I get my way, but otherwise not.

(44,972 posts)Joe's agenda and gave cover to the 2 Republicans who might have been willing to vote for her to vote no on her. Representative? I'm not so sure, but Manchin sure represented something on Trumps nasty ass picks.

(58,785 posts)government even while claiming they have the right, and even a duty , to subvert the sovereign rights of all who disagree with them really need to do some serious thinking.
Unfortunately for those of all ideologies who are fed up with being outvoted by majorities and cannot accept and respect the rights of others, the liberal Democratic Party is implacably committed to maintaining our democratic republic. We're the kind who created it in the first place, after all. You know, how best to secure for everyone equality and rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness through government of, by and for the people?
But those ideals are not shared by everyone by a long shot.

(54,268 posts)Manchin is the worst Senator we could have except for all the Republicans that could be there instead of him.
Sure, we'd prefer an Al Franken clone, but Al Franken would get 26% of the vote in a West Virginia Senate race.

As far as Susan Collins goes...she goes whichever way Moscow Mitch goes. It's a symptom of having your head up someone's ass. You tend to follow them.

(51,504 posts)It would be one thing if Tanden had been nominated to a lifetime appointment for a federal judgeship, for which a higher standard applies and judicial temperament is part of the equation. But that test doesnt apply with the same force to executive branch officials, and, in any event, presidents are entitled to broad deference in how to assemble their Cabinet. New presidents who have four years to succeed deserve their team in place, absent disqualifying personal flaws or other serious cause for concern. There are exceptions to every rule, but mean tweets doesnt even come close.
This is especially true when it comes to the Office of Management and Budget, which is almost an extension of the White House staff. The closer one gets to the Oval Office, the more deference a presidents nominees should receive on policy grounds. The secretaries of state and defense and the attorney general might need to have been living above the public fray, but the fray exists to elevate presidents and parties. Disqualifying the most effective of the pugilists is going to rebound on both parties, whose younger generations are full of Twitter addicts who approach debate like the locker room of soccer club AFC Richmond. Finally, senators should remember there will be another GOP president. He or she will want their own team and that team should be full of the partys best minds, including those who have displayed sharp elbows on air and online. For 40 years, Ive watched fine nominees be pulled under withering insinuation and false accusations. From John Agresto, unsuccessfully nominated to be the national archivist by President Ronald Reagan, to Andy Puzder, unsuccessfully nominated to be secretary of labor by President Donald Trump, Ive seen friends of surpassing talent denied the opportunity to serve because of ridiculous overreaction and fictional charges. Its time to reset the confirmation bar to exclude only serious objections, not the fact that some senators carry grudges and that the group as a whole wants a safe harbor from mean tweets. One or more GOP senators should step forward and set a precedent for the next Republican administration: I am voting to confirm Neera Tanden despite what she has said or written about me or my fellow senators because the president deserves his first team on the field early. And we expect the Democrats to play by the same rules in four or eight years.

(833 posts)We might as well get use used to his not marching to the progressive drum. As such, he'll be a thorn in the Dem caucus's side until somebody makes him an offer he can't refuse--probably a succession of offers, since he now knows he has the swing vote. What a power trip he must be on!

(35,420 posts)because he blocked Tanden? Probably 0.
So, who exactly is he courting favor with? Manchin, like all other elected Democrats in the Senate, are tied with Biden. There's no escaping that. Being a maverick to Biden's agenda does nothing for you politically. NOTHING.
