Shalanda Young emerging as a top contender to lead OMB with Neera Tanden's nomination on the rocks

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/22/politics/shalanda-young-omb-neera-tanden/index.html

(CNN)Shalanda Young, who last month was nominated as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, has emerged as a leading contender for the top position at the office, an official familiar with the matter told CNN, as Neera Tanden's confirmation grows even more unlikely.

Young, who was the first Black woman to serve as the staff director of the House Appropriations Committee, has strong relationships on Capitol Hill -- "with Republicans and Democrats alike," the official said. She played a key role in recent budget negotiations, working with GOP Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama and other Republicans. Young also doesn't have a Twitter account or a paper trail of incendiary comments, two officials say, which are at the root of Tanden's troubles.

While the White House is officially still standing by Tanden as its choice for OMB director, the prospects for confirmation diminished throughout the day Monday after four key Republicans announced they will vote against her nomination, citing her past social media behavior. Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia had said late last week he would not support Tanden, making her confirmation dependent on attracting at least one Republican vote.

White House chief of staff Ron Klain, who is a close friend of Tanden's, is making calls to senators, looking for a Republican to step up and support her, but those efforts have not been successful. Two other contenders for the OMB post are Ann O'Leary, a former chief of staff to Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Gene Sperling, a former director of the National Economic Council, officials said. O'Leary also has long connections with Klain and experience from the Clinton White House, but has far fewer connections on Capitol Hill. "Shalanda would be a slam dunk to get confirmed," a Democrat close to the White House tells CNN.

"..a paper trail of incendiary comments, two officials say, which are at the root of Tanden's troubles. "

We had 4 years of trumpTweets & the Repubs are offended by Tanden's 'mean tweets'?

It's because they won't get away with crooked shit at the OMB with Tanden guarding the door.

She was just accurately describing politicians' policy positions, albeit sharply. She did not attack anyone's kids or wife, like Grinnell, who was confirmed.

However, the tweets were directed towards people she’s needs their votes. If they were general tweets, she’d make it. But calling out Collins, Romney and another repug were truthful statements. But now she won’t get their votes.

Young is.

If he does, he REALLY risks be tarred as a straight up racist by a shedload of people, hell, maybe even fellow Democratic Congress members (I would say it might be Cori Bush or Rashida Tlaib as the 2 most likely to drop that dime, they both have real 'loose cannon' potential). It will cause a intra-party crisis for sure if it goes to that level.

I think he is boxed in now but Biden must be fuming, and unfortunately, I fear, Manchin is just getting warmed up with the blocking. He is already doing the 'aw shucks, I may not support him, I have not made up my mind' routine about yet ANOTHER person of colour, Xavier Becerra for the HHS head.

Again people telling me we need him. Okay and how is Lieberman 2.0 gonna help us? He voted with Trump 75% of the time. He is opposing anything meaningful to help improve peoples lives. Great having a majority in the Senate. But how much can we get done with him being the turd in the punch bowl?

I was genuinely surprised with this pick given her prior job at ACP. Young seems much more suited for the OMB top job, plenty of the right experience.
