Cherokee Nation asks Jeep to 'retire' name of SUV

The Cherokee Nation said Monday it has asked for its tribal name to be removed as a nameplate from Jeep sport utility vehicles and called for a dialogue with the automaker on "cultural appropriateness."

The Native American group's principal chief Chuck Hoskin Jr told Jeep's parent firm Stellantis " he does not condone" the use of the name Cherokee on the vehicles, according to a statement.

"I think we're in a day and age in this country where it's time for both corporations and team sports to retire the use of Native American names, images and mascots from their products, team jerseys and sports in general," Hoskin said in his initial statement.

"I'm sure this comes from a place that is well-intended, but it does not honor us by having our name plastered on the side of a car.

"The best way to honor us is to learn about our sovereign government, our role in this country, our history, culture and language and have meaningful dialogue with federally recognized tribes on cultural appropriateness."

The news comes with growing momentum to remove Native American names and images from sports teams in the United States, which many now see as demeaning to the indigenous peoples.

He articulated my sentiments so well. It does not honor us to have our names plastered on the side of a car or as sports team mascots. We should get to decide how our names are used--as a few tribes have done.

1. It's not as if there isn't a suitable alternative.

The Jeep Liberty was supposed to be a replacement for the Cherokee. That lasted two iterations before it switched back to Cherokee. And outside the US the Liberty was known as the Cherokee. Now "Grand Cherokee" would need a totally new name I suppose but the Commander nameplate can be revived here.

3. The Army should think of new names for helicopters.

Apache, Iroquois, Blackhawk, Chinook, etc. Should these be renamed to something generic and harmless?

4. Re-name it to what it wants to be

A Land Rover Defender, either the old version of the new one.

Jeep had a good thing after WWII, but since Iacoca and the failed design efforts of the 1960's & 70;s, it's clear where JEEP stand.

Now that Fiat owns it, it should put some euro design into it and make the Jeep a road version of a farm tractor.
Insane torque of an off-road utility vehicle, not the boytoy chick magnet it unfortunately has become.

Restore Jeep as a jeep.

As one of the best selling brands in the entire industry ? Fiat no longer owns it; it is now called Stellantis . Oh, and Chrysler didn't even buy Jeep from AMC until 1987.

9. Of course I agree that these tribes own their names

and they should have control over the usage.

But speaking as a total Caucasian, non Native American, I have to admit that the removal of these names makes me a bit sad because I don’t see them as negative, in fact if anything, the connotation in advertising is one of strength and resilience. I think as a kid I grew up wanting to be on the Indian side of cowboy and Indian games because their names, used in advertising, sounded strong and heroic.
Sure,people should know the tribes based on history and not automobile models, but sadly, advertising reaches many more folks, and if we rely on history for these things, I fear that in fifty years no non Native American child will be acquainted with these beautiful names.
And I think that would be a loss.

10. Mine is 35 yrs old, 203,500 miles on it.

Runs perfect. It is an incredibly reliable, durable, and faithful old friend, can climb a stump, has taken me to Mexico and back many times, and to camps and awesome places down old washed out desert and mountain roads that aren't really roads anymore.

Maybe they could rename it the Jeep America.
