During World War II, U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mount Suribachi, where they raised two American flags, and more events that happened on this day in history.

Great interview with IAN, but long. I recommend you watch if you have the time. Iwo discussion starts around 41:50 in.



My father was a Marine NCO who served in the Pacific during WWII. He was in a Marine Recon unit, and saw action on many of the Central Pacific Island campaigns. He did not hit the beach at IWO though - probably a good reason I am here today. He was hurt on Okinawa, he would have probably have returned to action in the fall of 1945 and most likely would have been killed in the invasion of the Japanese home islands if that had occurred.

Thanks for the thread. Those young men deserve to be remembered for their sacrifice.
