'Different Rules For Dems': Biden's Briefing Not Must-Air TV

Media Bites 2/22/21 3:58 pm Read time: 4 minutes

We all know why CNN has pulled the plug on airing daily White House briefings live. They're not chaotic lie-fests like the former guy's were.
By Eric Boehlert

After creating new programming rules for the Trump administration and airing virtually every minute of every White House press briefing live and in its entirety, CNN has quietly cut the cord with the new Democratic administration.

Just one month into President Joe Biden's term, the all-news cable channel last week stopped airing the daily White House press briefings. Perhaps the events weren't entertaining enough, as White House spokesperson Jen Psaki has routinely declined to insert Biden into cultural war debates, refused to castigate reporters, and won’t make stuff up in the name of partisan warfare, the way her Republican predecessors did.

Instead, Psaki has answered questions as best she can about White House policy, while treating journalists with respect, instead of mocking them in search of cheap political points.

Not like people are waiting in lines to get food, or children are going hungry, and then there is the measly news about a pandemic
........... or getting relief to people because you know there are 12-18 million people without jobs or a wages to survive on or how some psychopath is playing golf and could have done a least some kind of modicum with some empathy of telling the truth at the beginning, but nope we don't need transparency, we need reality style tv news.........

The Judge Merritt hearings were in during one briefing. It actually seems like briefings are scheduled while other events are happening. Trump wasn’t doing anything else.

I refuse to watch M$NBC during the day, until Nicole Wallace comes on.

6. For CNN honchos, it was always about the entertainment factor

Which translated into how many eyeballs they could attract for the Wild West lying rodeo. Jeff Zucker spilled the beans early on during the 2016 primaries and early days of Trump's reign:

Trump may be bad for the country but he's great TV.

I recall reading that line and thinking: You SOB! You would watch the country torn apart by an inept old man who doesn't know what he's doing and doesn't care so that CNN's ratings go up.

Consequently, I don't find CNN cutting Jen Psaki's press conferences because they're too normal, briefings without the fireworks and constant lying.

The entertainment factor. Or as Neil Postman predicted: Amusing ourselves to death.

7. Press briefings were so rare during the last admin that they were hot news.

Hopefully stations are still monitoring them and will summarize the events.

These daily ones are a "new" thing for the media.

9. I don't see a disturbing trend. They did show them daily (even the Saturday briefings)....

....until a little more than a week ago except for during the trial. Now we've got hearings going on, sometimes more than one at a time. They keep going to those and may feel it's not worth interrupting a 50-minute briefing to go to a hearing.

Let's give it a little more time, especially after all these hearing are over.

Just a professional press briefing conducted with no attitude. All-business. Therefore: boring.

They’re rolling on it, though, so they don’t miss the fireworks if there are any.

11. IIRC, they didn't regularly carry these things live until Trump's daily pandemic updates.

Unless there was something unusual going on, we only got the highlights later in the day. The networks also put them up on their web pages, YouTube pages, etc. As long as it's all made available, I don't give a shit whether or not they carry it live every damn day. This "controversy" is just another example of Trump's abnormalities were so normalized that folks don't recognize what "normal" actually is.

I bet ratings would pick up, and the briefings would be back on the air.
