A father-to-be from Liberty, N.Y. has died after a device he was building for his child's gender-reveal party exploded, according to police. Gender-reveal parties are celebrations announcing whether expecting parents are going to have a girl or a boy.
Christopher Pekny, 28, was assembling the device in the town of Liberty when it exploded just before noon on Sunday. Police said the blast killed Mr Pekny and injured his brother Michael Pekny, 27, who was taken to hospital.
Speaking to the newspaper, Mr Pekny's oldest brother, Peter Pekny Jr, described what happened as "the freakiest of freak accidents that I could ever imagine". He did not know what had set off the explosion. "We thought it would be fun".
Police have not specified what device caused Sunday's explosion. New York's state police department and its bomb disposal unit are investigating the incident. A spokesman for state police told the New York Times the device consisted of some kind of pipe (containing explosives), without giving further details.

(38,427 posts)That is a whole lot. Some are smart, and some are not so smart. When you think you have seen
it all, there is more. More of what? More of anything you can imagine. Why that answer? Over
time that answer has been proven true. People do some very unusual and crazy things.
....Some things we could not have even have thought of .... people do anyway.
....Read the news
....And you will see
....How crazy people can be.......The End !!

(2,815 posts)I went through a brief period of interest in that type of thing. But I got a clear picture of the dangers and we stayed away from any notion of making black powder. Our kid is already scared of fireworks so he stays clear when our summer crew sets any such off. I explained to him that the stuff is made very cheaply in sweatshops so deadly chances of errors abound with that stuff before considering user errors.

(12,424 posts)I suspect there's a hidden agenda to promote fetal personhood by celebrating this stuff. I understand baby showers, which come from tradition of re-use of outgrown clothing and paraphernalia, especially in cases where the woman has limited means to spend on all the necessaries for the baby.

(50,557 posts)That child is going to grow up fatherless.
This will be an uncomfortable conversation:
"Mommy, how did Daddy die?"
"Oh, he was a great warrior and he died defending our beloved nation."
"No, really. How did Daddy die? For reals."
"He was building a pipe bomb to set off at your gender reveal party and it exploded while he was making it. When it did, it killed your daddy and put your uncle in the hospital."
"Mommy, will I grow up to be a total dumbass like Daddy was?"
"I hope not, sweetie. I hope not."
