"If it bleeds, it leads" is a known factor in what we see on tv.
With that in mind, note how focused the news channels are on this. A good reporter knows the story long before it's been made public. They talk to witnesses and paramedics off the record so when they say they know nothing of the condition of Woods they're just waiting official releases to report. They know whether or not Woods will in an ICU or walking out on a treated and release. If he's ok they'll keep us posted. if he's not, they'll stay with the story like a dog with a frisbee.
I have a feeling Tiger Woods is toast, or at best a pop tart.
On edit:
I guess I was pretty callous about this, and I'm sorry I offended.
On the other hand, I've never gotten so many responses on a post.

(4,170 posts)All Ive heard is injuries. I can think of many celebrities in accidents where its reported. Doesnt mean theyve died.

(11,583 posts)Even after they knew he'd survived and was just badly injured. It was a bit unnerving. I'm not even sure they were aware they were doing it.

(166 posts)I can't stop thinking about young Charlie, either. Its breaking my heart. I lost my Mother at 10 yrs old after being an invalid for years. Very difficult times ahead for the Woods family. I'm betting lil Charlie is on a private jet right now but he most likely won't be able to see his Dad with Covid restrictions...

(18,619 posts)But that would seem I was just bowing to pressure. I feel bad that I offended, but I really believe that's the morbid way the news works. My words were not the most compassionate, but they explain why I believe we're seeing Tiger Woods wall to wall. If he was alright, we'd be watching something else.
I can add that I do hope he comes out alright, I don't dislike him, but it doesn't look good.

So, he wrote something that was in bad taste- big deal. I've been on DU longer than either of you, and I have seen many long term posters write something "in poor taste." God knows I have.
But, define him? No. Not at all.

(18,619 posts)I'm not even going to use that joke about his habit of hooking his drives.
I swear, I can compose a carefully worded four paragraph essay on the state of an affair, and I'll score 2 recs and a comment before it sinks off the latest page. But I post this one piece of callous dithering and people tell their friends to come over and offer their helpful criticism, although I only got one less rec than usual.

(18,619 posts)I feel better now. I thought I was the only one you took time from your day to advise. It turns out you offer your services indiscriminately. At least you're consistent.
As an aside, I wonder what happened between my post and the one yesterday. Mine was roundly panned with many calling me the absolute dregs of an open society, and I got zero recs. Twenty four hours later a different poster referring to Woods as an uncaring animal who deserved what he got goes straight to the greatest page with mostly positive comments. Now that I know there's a one day waiting period for flippancy in the face of tragedy, I'll be more woke.

He was back on the tour the next year. He went on to win six Majors after the accident.

(7,510 posts)That is 118 / day over that period of time.
"One death is a tragedy, a million deaths a statistic."
The current rate is only about 90 / day, even though miles driven daily is much greater, due to improvements in cars and roads. Improvement in humans? I doubt it.
