I'm sorry Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car crash and I hope he recovers OK. But CNN and MSNBC have been covering this non-stop since about 2:30. There is little to no new news.

(53,214 posts)It is a news story, but as you say, five minutes should be enough to cover anything pertinent. Meanwhile, there is plenty going on in the world more important than one golf pro's unfortunate accident. I would have expected that today's hearings would have dominated most of the news today. Then there are numerous COVID related stories, cabinet confirmations, and the Stimulus Bill.
I hope Tiger Woods recovers, but I don't need to hear about it nonstop 24/7.

Also, he doesn't have a history of DUI, when they stopped him many years ago he was under the influence of "pain medicines", these were prescription medicines.

(4,094 posts)As I said, the previous time this happened it was because he mixed prescription drugs. It is false about the DUI history.

(3,921 posts)and I don't think these networks 'get' this; we're political news people and like seeing our regular shows, especially with so much going on with the confirmation hearings etc.
Anytime a celebrity stubs their toe we get 24/7 coverage similar to the OJ stuff - it's the same reality show environment that led to Trump.

(4,094 posts)He is the guy who moves the needle in Golf, ratings go way up when he plays, crowds fill up the venues when he plays, etc. etc...he brings the money to golf better than anyone in the history of the game, and that is why there is so much concern about his wellbeing.
I understand that people who don't like golf, or Tiger for that matter, don't want to see hours of his accident, but there is a multi-billion industry out there that does, and millions of golfers who do follow Tiger Woods and are also concerned.

This is what we have known since 11:00 am (Im in California): it was a rollover, it was a single car crash, Tiger was the driver and only occupant, the jaws of life were needed to extract him, hes in the hospital with unknown level of injuries, and he was in the process of trying to reboot his career.
Its not like someone tried to overthrow the US government or anything.
They are now 40 minutes into Nicolle Wallaces program hey, wait! We are being promised news about the 1/9 hearings...

(1,408 posts)On MSNBC. When they went to Woods I didn't change channels until all of a sudden I realized more than an hour had gone by. I checked out CNN for 10 minutes or so and nothing new so checked faux news for couple minutes and they had it on too so went back to MSNBC. They were still on him. Then somebody said something about staying on the Woods story until a presser at 6.
I'm now watching Adam-12 and at 6 the Flintstones.

(833 posts)about him as if he'd died. I'm a bad man for thinking this, but maybe they'd be happier if he were actually dead: it would be even bigger, more sensational news they could cover non-stop, calling it "breaking" late into the night.

(35,075 posts)I guess now that tRump is out of office, people are taking a much-needed break from the news but when they do tune in, they want to see a major breaking news story.
That being said, the coverage has an obituary-type vibe. When I first tuned in, I thought he had died. So yeah, it's probably time to move on or at least adjust the tone of the coverage.

(16,511 posts)A couple of months after 9-11 we were watching Ashleigh Banfield's coverage from the Middle East. She had arranged a roundtable discussion, the panelists comprised of Israeli and Palestinian college students. It promised to bring very germane observations based on lived perspective, and we were looking forward to those conversations. Just as it was about to begin, MSNBC cut in to cover the arrest of Robert Blake. They never did show the roundtable.
I think about that episode every time some talking head laments many Americans' apparent ignorance of relevant current events. And any "journalist" who participates in the subsuming to gush and glitter owes an apology to those who responsibly practice the profession.

(4,168 posts)Real journalism takes time.
Besides getting the story, there's work discerning the motives of sources (are they truthful, malicious, have a hidden agenda?).
Then there's confirming the story, and getting interviews from different perspectives on the story so it will have more context.
Perhaps expertise needs to be consulted.
All that takes time from the reporter, photojournalist or videographer, fact checkers, editor.
Salaries and expenses that can cover days, weeks, months.
The celebrity crises like this one also don't ruffle feathers, anger powerful people, rock the boat.
