Key committee votes postponed in troubling sign for Tanden nomination

By Clare Foran and Ted Barrett, CNN
Updated 9:49 AM ET, Wed February 24, 2021

Excerpt:

Washington (CNN) - Two hearings that were scheduled to vote on Neera Tanden's nomination to be the director of the Office of Management and Budget were unexpectedly postponed Wednesday, a possible indication that her imperiled nomination may be being pulled.

Senators want more time to consider the nomination, an official on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee who is familiar with the matter tells CNN. A senior aide on the other panel, the Senate Budget Committee, told CNN its hearing also was postponed and that Chairman Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats and who has clashed with Tanden in the past, personally informed Tanden on the phone Tuesday night about the committee's plans to postpone the markup.

Warning sign for Neera Tanden. Murkowski, whose vote could seal her fate, is critical of past tweets. “I don't think that that's a model that we want to set for anybody whether it's a nominee, whether it's a president or whether it's a senator. So I'd like us all to cool that”

Murkowski was unaware of an old Tanden tweet that has surfaced, attacking Murkowski's support for the GOP tax law until @seungminkim showed her

"That goes to show how much homework I still have to do about her if I didn't even know that she sent out a tweet about me."

I asked if that tweet would affect her vote: "I suggested to the White House that my colleagues were being very critical of the statements, and rightly so and I think some of them were clearly over the top.” Says “we've kind of gotten numb to derogatory tweets” but shouldn’t

Murkowski is still undecided and WH officials have reached out to her. But she hasn’t spoken to Biden or Tanden yet
