Two-Thirds of New York City's Arts and Culture Jobs Are Gone

Jobs in arts, entertainment and recreation fell by 66% in 2020 from a year ago, the largest decline among the city’s economic sectors, erasing a decade of gains in what was one of New York’s most vibrant industries, the report said. The business district that includes Chelsea and midtown Manhattan was the hardest-hit area of the city, accounting for 46% of all jobs in the sector.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has had a profound and negative impact on the industry,” Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said Wednesday in a statement. “It has forced facilities to close, thrust thousands into unemployment and pushed businesses to the brink of collapse.” ....................(more)

What did they expect to happen? I’d say a ton more closings are coming all over the country.

I hope that, in time, those jobs will return, but there’s no guarantee of that, and I feel sad for the thousands of people in that industry who have lost their jobs, through no fault of their own, and will never get them back.

Life is going to be different for a long time. I’m afraid of the jobs that are hanging on because of hope things will return to normal. I don’t see that happening until 2023. What I mean is 100 percent capacity is actually filled.
