LA County Sheriff says Tiger Woods was 'not drunk' during crash: 'Purely an accident'
https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/30957919/la-county-sheriff-says-tiger-woods-was-not-drunk-crash-purely-accident
The Los Angeles County sheriff says Tiger Woods was "not drunk" during the rollover that seriously injured the golf superstar Tuesday, saying the single-vehicle crash was "purely an accident."
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said his department would not be filing any charges against Woods pertaining to the crash near the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, about 30 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
Woods, 45, was "awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room," according to the statement.

(12,904 posts)My son fell asleep and hit a tree two doors down, at 3 oclock one morning. Not drunk. Just tired. He has quit driving.
I know one other shitty driver, but it would take pages to list all her accomplishments. But she rarely drinks. Suffice to say, I never ride in a car with her behind the wheel.

(12,358 posts)I understand he had surgery last week. Was he taking pain meds in response to the surgery?
Maybe he is just a shitty driver but somehow, looking at the accident photos.....

(64,951 posts)He was on his way to a video shoot of golf tips for Oprah's production company.
He is obsessive about being on time, which for him means 20 or 30 minutes early.
He got a late start (known from witness statements at the hotel). He was upset that he was running behind schedule.
He had a fast car, probably thought he could make up time, and went too fast down a steep hill.
I don't think there needs to be any more to the story than he was driving a car he doesn't know, too fast, and he's 45, so doesn't have the reflexes he used to have.

(12,358 posts)I'm 78. I put 50k+ miles on my car, per year. My car dealer, where I get my oil changed, remarks on my driving distance. I drive a lot. Over 1.3 million miles in my life. NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT. And yes, I drive over the speed limit.
Ok. So he's running late. The car likely has a small "black box." What was the speed at time of accident?
If drugs for pain control were involved, I don't quite blame him. Still, it would be interesting to know.

(64,951 posts)What's your point? I clearly said he was rushing to make up time, more than likely.
I've been driving for 48 years, never had a moving violation.
One accident: t-boned by a guy who ran a stop sign. I was 40, but reflexes had nothing to do with it.
But, it's a fact that reflexes & reaction time slow with age. There's a reason there aren't a lot of 50 year NASCAR of F-1 drivers. They know when it's time.
If he was going too fast, and he has 45 year old, not 25 year old reflexes, it can easily set up an accident.
It's a published fact that Tiger doesn't take narcotic pain meds any longer. He went with the multiple back surgeries, including one radical one, rather than try to manage pain medicinally.
I'm not excusing his going way too fast. I just think this is a case where a punctuality freak got carried away and took a fully unnecessary risk.
He was 25 minutes away at the speed limit. He still would have been early. Just not as early as he wanted.
It's on him, but I don't think impairment needs to be considered, especially given the police statement.

(53,758 posts)so I doubt he would've taken a drink before hand. The accident happened at 7:12 and the shoot was to start at 8:00. It was reported that the road is on a steep, downward grade with a sweeping curve and has had several accidents as a quick build up of speed can catch drivers unfamiliar with the road unawares.
He had already recorded one session the day before with Dwayne Wade and David Spade. They showed it on ESPN yesterday with their coverage of the accident and Tiger looked great as he joked around with D-Wade. Now he's hurt and may not ever get back to competitive golf again.

(64,951 posts)Another factor is that Tiger is obsessively punctual. To him, 15 minutes early is late.
So, it's even more likely he was driving too fast trying to make up time.
I think you & I are 100% in agreement.

(418 posts)Really ? There are very few real accidents. Driving too fast is not an accident. Not paying attention is not an accident. Etc., etc., etc.

(23,926 posts)An accident is an unplanned occurrence.
Unless it's your contention that every speed-related, or attention-lapse vehicle mishap was intentional, perhaps there's another issue at work here.

(11,761 posts)a golfer and they associate him with trump? Is it because of the salacious headlines of the past? Internet rumors repeated over and over of what a horrible person Tiger is, without first-hand knowledge, just to be in on the pile-on game. I've seen some ruthless stuff regurgitated, some not so veiled racism... Some want instant 'karma' and charges without the investigation completed. Disappointing, but not unexpected. Never have too high a hopes.
