Holy crap we came close to trump getting a 5th seat filled on the USPS governing board

Thanks again to the voters of Georgia for Ossoff and Warnock!

Dec. 16, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. EST

President Trump is expected to nominate a fifth Republican to the governing board of the U.S. Postal Service, potentially cementing GOP control over an agency that has generated intense political interest during the coronavirus pandemic and 2020 election.

President-elect Joe Biden was primed to take office with three open seats on the nine-member board; if all his nominees were Democrats, it would have given his party a one-seat majority and potentially the votes to replace DeJoy. Biden also could have replaced Democratic board governor Ron Bloom, whose term expired this month but can serve in a one-year holdover role until a successor is confirmed.

Bernardi’s confirmation would spoil those plans, though it is unclear if the Senate will rush through the approval process before Trump leaves office, especially with lawmakers seeking to get a pandemic stimulus bill done. A spokesman for Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said it was highly unlikely the panel would schedule any more hearings or meetings before the chamber adjourns to end the year, and Bernardi’s nomination would have to be resubmitted to the new Congress.

Control of the committee would then hinge upon the results of Georgia’s Jan. 5 election
. Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Purdue were forced into runoffs after failing to capture 50 percent of the vote during the general election last month. Their Democratic challengers, the Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, would both have to win to flip the chamber, with Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris able to cast tie-breaking votes.
