Say you were an aspiring defense attorney, and you were given five years to prove yourself in order to become a partner at a big law firm.

You are given the cases of Benedict Arnold, John Wilkes Booth, Charles Manson, Jeffery Dahmer, Alvin Karpis, Lavrentiy Beria and Heinrich Himmler. That is pretty much the position McCarthy is in, and he already sympathizes with most of his defendants to begin with.

That would give me a few grey hairs as well, and that's pretty much all I have already.
