What Terrible Things Did Neera Tanden Tweet?
February 25, 2021 at 8:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard
And how about the times Tanden allegedly called the NAACP a pinko organization that hates white people and used racial epithets? My bad. That was Jeff Sessions. Again, 51 Republican senators (and one Democrat, Manchin) voted to confirm him as attorney general in 2017.
Surely Tanden went beyond the pale when she liked a tweet calling then-Secretary of State John F. Kerry a traitor and Vietnams worst export, and when she suggested Clinton supporters leave the country. Except Mike Pompeo was the one who did those things. He won confirmation as secretary of state in 2018 with the votes of 50 Republicans and six Democrats, including Manchin.

(6,265 posts)we would have trouble with him. The day after his election. I just hope he stands with us.

(34,376 posts)At this point, I'm afraid that's the best we can expect from West Virginia. A Senator who votes with us 60% of the time is better than one voting with us 0% although I wish it didn't have to be.
llashram
(6,265 posts)and I agree completely

(68,556 posts)plenty of qualified folks. This is not worth a lengthy battle...we need to get the Covid bill out. And one last thing, with out Manchin, the GOP holds the Senate and McConnell is in charge.

(6,265 posts)I understand our tenuous hold on Congress, both Senate and House of Representatives. Always has wish, washy Democrats. And that's for whatever reason. Constituency, personal politics. Whatever. In these dangerous times we ALL need to stand shoulder to shoulder as the wall of decency in this country against RW hate, malfeasance and ignorance. Politicians like Manchin slow down the building of trust amongst us. And yeah, we are stuck with him.
OnDoutside
(19,956 posts)voted her through, and there probably wouldn't have been a word said. Plainly, if he can vote to confirm Richard Grenelle, he sure as hell can vote to confirm Neera Tanden. It really does suggest something else going on here, that has not surfaced yet.

(19,199 posts)yeah, don't mess with Daddy's little girl, even if she is an avaricious, heartless, con-woman. That's way over the line.

(58,785 posts)Not defending his high-wire act on this, trying to defend his daughter and the company caught out in egregious price gouging, but it's certainly understandable. Relationships among people interconnected in various ways in small states typically appear incestuous on mere glance, and of course on closer look inevitably often turn out to be.
If you were running an NGO helping women on the street there, including funding raising, encouraging employers to hire, and lobbying and otherwise dealing with people in government, or were just on a county commission, you might well be acquainted with and know more about the person you're calling an "avaricious, heartless con woman," and for sure others in that big company, and it'd be critically important to you to maintain good professional and social relations with them.

(19,199 posts)Thanks for that.
druidity33
(6,446 posts)really has nothing to do with Tanden or the price of Epipens and how it affects poor people (or people without HC when the price spikes). Are you excusing someone's behavior? The only behavior here i am excusing is Tanden's "nasty" tweets.

(7,820 posts)Doesnt mean theyre not.
Staph
(6,251 posts)but I am less upset with Manchin after I found out about the tweet about his daughter.
If he were just against Tanden because of her general tweeting, I'd be screaming about his sexism, etc. But when it involves a tweet about family . . . well, family is very important here in West Virginia. And "daddy's little girl" is a universal concept.
I think we'll have his vote on all of the rest of the Biden nominees.
(FYI - I am in no way defending Heather Bresch (the Manchin daughter) and Mylan Pharmaceutical's heinous policies on Epipen pricing. And Mylan is closing their West Virginia plant, so their interest and investment in Manchin is likely to decrease in the future.)

(11,518 posts)EVERYTHING Democrats want to achieve depends on Manchin and Senema being team players, unless we can get one or two GQPer votes (which certainly won't happen).
So yeah, as much as I hate losing anything because of an asshole like Manchin, sometimes it's best to pick your battles and move on from some of them. Certainly Joe can find another well qualified nominee.

(2,596 posts)Biden ought to buttonhole Manchin and point-blank ask him if he works for his daughter's big pharma corporation (and the industry* as a whole) or if he works for his constituents. Manchin's pettiness is on full display - and the rethugs (big fucking surprise there!) are showing once again what fucking hypocrites they all are. The were pretty damn fine with five+ years of tRump's vile, boorish and misogynistic behavior(s), treason and sedition, and now they've got the Miss Pittypat vapors over Neera Tanden? GMAFB.
ETA: *he probably is beholden to pharma lobbyists.

(19,199 posts)that doesn't require Senate approval and she can still be a thorn in the GOP's side. I agree, let's not choose to die upon this hill. There are more important battles ahead.

(11,563 posts)He is absolutely not an ideal, progressive Democrat, and we have no idea why he is the way he is on any given moment or issue. This was already pointed out. So, that is a conundrum, but not the dilemma I mentioned.
What's the point of arguing/debating/discussing his politics and behavior when it seems he's going to do what he wants in any of those given moments? This may be somewhat paranoid on my part, but I don't want to be part of any pressure he feels to jump ship and embrace his Inner Republican.
Nothing we say is going to bring him into the fold, so to speak, so why add to whatever forces he feels pulling or pushing him? It seems to me that, absent any real hope of "success" in changing his mind, there is an element of political purity in this.
Unless you have a receptive "target," it's a waste of time and energy, and may contribute to creating a negative effect...which could be a catastrophe. He already has - and knows he has, unless he's the dumbest person in politics - a fair amount of leverage in Democratic policy discussions and especially in votes. Why give him more, or more reason to use what he has, or worse?

(9,952 posts)Racism. Cops murdering our young black men. So in our face. White people throwing hissies across the nation while blacks are minding their own business. Thanks for acknowledging because if we do not say it out loud, it will not be seen. That is the very thing that pissed this group off in the first place. That a woman is calling it out. Not to be seen or suffer this.
