"It's very important for us to ignore the temptation to look away," Cheney said. "And it's very important, especially for us as Republicans, to make clear that we aren't the party of white supremacy.
"You certainly saw anti-Semitism. You saw the symbols of Holocaust denial... you saw a Confederate flag being carried through the rotunda," she said, referencing the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol. "We, as Republicans in particular, have a duty and an obligation to stand against that, to stand against insurrection."

Funny how instead of encouraging actions to betray the very much earned label of her party, she is more concerned with denying reality.

Is much of their support for McCarthy, and Trump, only part of their public face?

Good luck with that. What would remain of the GOP might amount to a few dozen politicians, maybe less.
Cheney wants the veneer back. The GOP has always been a white supremacist party. They were far more successful in keeping it under the radar before Trump.
If Cheney is truly disgusted with white supremacy in the GOP, she should be starting up another "conservative" political party, because the GOP has always been about white supremacy and it always will be.

(36,827 posts)it's that it exposed the GOP's true nature by making what was once mostly a covert white supremacy ideology into a very much overt one. It exposed all the hate and bigotry for everyone to see and from that point on they must decide which side of that divide they are on. Not surprisingly most chose the side of white supremacy.
