They would be horrified by what they would find

The Sermon on the Mount. One of the greatest political speeches ever delivered.

That said, Repukes and other professional conservatives are deeply cynical liars who believe next to nothing of the values or arguments they spew out. They know other people believe that they believe that stuff, and that's all the raw material they need to work their grift.

So even if they had read it, it wouldn't matter because their true internal knowledge of their purported religion has got nothing to do with their actions.

I have, however, read "Catcher in the Rye," and "Jane Eyre." Do those count? Oh, and "The Caine Mutiny" and "Marjorie Morning Star."

They were more interesting to me. And of course anything by Anais Nin.

Does that make me a bad person?

It’s the irony of people who identify as gawd’s own failing to recognize a blatant transgression. Graven images are explicitly prohibited and the ‘golden calf’ imagery is unavoidable. I’m fairly certain that no one here gives a flip about your personal familiarity (or lack thereof) with the Bible.

They're pushing people to see how far they can go.

I mean, the skorts, the sandals, holding a tablet, gold statue.

This is intended to invoke someone's memory of The Ten Commandments.

It has to be.

God does not recognize them...they cherry-pick the verses to support their hate and ignorance. Southern Baptists early on were supporters of slavery and still very racist. I bet many modern 'christians' know nothing of love outside their ignorant and offensive ways and lives.

Then they can go out and proclaim "God said (whatever they're against) is wrong". Because their preacher told them. And the preacher before that told their parents. And the preacher before that told their grandparents. So it must be true.

Oh, preacher man will toss out a scripture or two having used his own narrative to frame what the passage(s) means, so when they do look it up - if they do- they'll read it as preacher man intended for them to read it. And they'll call that proof. It's right there in THE Bible!

They learn religion the same way they learn science/facts - through long maintained and heavily entrenched filters.
