Indian man killed by his own rooster during cockfight

A rooster that had been fitted with a knife for an illegal cockfight has killed its owner in southern India.

The bird's owner was impaled in the groin by the knife as the animal tried to escape. The man died on the way to hospital from a loss of blood.

Police are now searching for 15 more people involved in the event, which took place in the village of Lothunur in Telangana state earlier this week.

Police said the animal was being readied to take part in a fight when it tried to escape. Its owner attempted to catch it but was struck by the 7cm-long (three inch) knife on the animal's leg during the struggle.

6. Years ago I went to a couple of cockfights in the thick trees in a local Mormon community.

A lot of betting went on, and drinking. My boss at the time had a large Rhode Island red rooster.
I know from my own experience raising chickens how mean they could be.
Knives, or slashers were the most common spur attachment. So my boss asked if he could bring his huge
rooster the next week to fight the little fighting cocks (raised only to fight). Sure, they said, bring
him over. So the next weekend we went again, and my boss attached the slashers, and as soon as
the birds were pitted, the red rooster jumped out of the pit and disappeared into the trees.
Laughter ensued. It took him a couple of hours to find it.
The fighting cocks are small, much smaller than a domestic rooster, and they are beautiful with long
colorful tails. But as soon as they are dead, they are thrown into the trash barrel on top of the beer cans.
It grossed me out, that image, and I never went back.
Some fights would be over in seconds, with a knife through the head of the other bird, but some
went on several minutes, with birds fighting with legs chopped off. A lot of money spent on the birds
and a lot bet on the fights.
