A former chair of the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday slammed what the event has now become, suggesting former President Ronald Reagan would not get elected by those in attendance at this years gathering.
Mickey Edwards who led the American Conservative Union, which organizes the event, for five years until 1983 ripped Republicans attending this years CPAC in Orlando for their devotion to former President Donald Trump.
In an interview with CNNs Erin Burnett, Edwards likened the GOP to a cult whose members are living in an alternate reality.
Edwards served as a GOP representative for Oklahoma for 16 years until 1993 but quit the GOP in January following the deadly U.S. Capitol riot. The violence was perpetrated by a violent mob of Trump supporters whod been whipped up by the then-presidents lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

While I think Reagan would perhaps be too liberal for today's GOP troglodytes I can't help but notice a similarity between the GOP's veneration of Reagan years ago and their current veneration of Trump.
Remember the GOP's nostalgia for Reagan during the Clinton years?
Seems conservatives desire to have a strong alpha figure as their leader. That person may or may not be tough but so long as they put out the illusion of strength they get a following.
Their belief seems more visceral than intellectual.

(3,402 posts)Their past hatred of communism had nothing to do with ideology or lack of freedom. Once communism ceased to be a threat to the American winner-take-all business model, the right embraced or didn't mind dictators like Putin, Kim Jung-un or Xi.

(833 posts)viewed conservatives as the natural successors to Tories: they love monarchical leaders. Now it's gotten worse, perhaps in a natural progression. They want a dictatorial strong man a la Hitler, etc.

I need to see the video of him cowering in front of that Black woman preacher during the campaign. That is who he really is.
He is a coward, fires people online or has others do it.
I have never seen one moment of strength from him.
