(22,035 posts)Journalism isn't free. News sources are businesses. Some outlets require that you pay for their content. It's annoying but it's hardly a new thing. Besides, if you can't get news from one source, there are others.
By the way, if you're clever, there are simple ways around paywalls. Complaining isn't one of them.
ETA: Sorry to be snarky on a Sunday morning. I need more coffee.

(4,168 posts)Unfortunately, one of the reasons our political scene is rife with misinformation is that reputable new organizations charge for their news. They have to, because good reporting and editorial standards require funding, unlike the right-wing blogs that spout nonsense or the ones who are funded by right-wing millionaires.
Mr.Bill
(24,284 posts)was basically the cost of the paper and the printing. Advertising space is how they made money.
The biggest problem is the loss of classified ad space. Craigslist, Ebay and other internet sites is what's killing the newspapers. A lot of websites make money with advertising. It's the newspapers and magazines that charge to read their websites. Most of them were too late and clumsy to go on the internet. To this day, newspapers and magazines along with TV news have the worst and most cumbersome websites. I read a local News website that is internet only, and frankly works far better than the website for the printed news and it's free. They make money from advertising.

(22,035 posts)In my ETA, I apologized for my early morning snarkiness. I meant no offense and I'm sorry if you interpreted my response to your post to be a criticism. I only meant to point out that people have always had to pay for information.
It would be heartbreaking if you were to forgo food for a newspaper or anything else, for that matter. There are numerous ways to work around a paywall, as I wrote. Other posters responded with some ideas, too.
We cannot expect the internet to be entirely free, not counting one's monthly connection fees. The content that we all consume online is created by people like you and me who need to make a living, too. They deserve to be compensated for their writings and other creations shared on the internet.
In any event, peace. I'm sorry for upsetting you.

(1,198 posts)I pay for the NY Times and the Washington Post and The Economist and The New Yorker. (and have done so for years). I don't pay for anything I think I may read 1-2 times a year.
I think it's ridiculous to ask a viewer to pay for a subscription without even letting the person read 1-2 articles. With most publications, how do I even know if I want to subscribe if I'm not allowed to even see 1 article? I HATE that arrogant presumption.
Especially when the site is "localcrap.tinytown.com" which I will likely never visit again.
Flames won't change my mind.

Trump Hid Fraud on Inheritance for Years, Niece Tells Judge
By Erik Larson
February 26, 2021, 7:28 PM EST
Donald Trumps niece is balking at the former presidents claim that she waited too long to file her multi-million dollar fraud suit against him, saying she would have sued sooner if he hadnt covered his tracks so well.
Mary Trump on Friday asked a judge to deny Donald Trumps motion to dismiss the suit, which she filed in September against her uncle and his siblings, Robert Trump and Maryanne Trump Barry. She claims they conspired to skim tens of millions of dollars off her stake in the family business for decades after her father died and left them as her fiduciaries.
The suit by the daughter of Donald Trumps late older brother, Fred Trump Jr., is one of several serious legal threats the former president faces as a private citizen. If the case in New York state court in Manhattan survives, he could be deposed under oath by the end of the year or early 2022.
The fight may hinge on New Yorks statute of limitations, which is two years from the time a victim discovered the fraud, or could with reasonable diligence have discovered it. Donald Trump, Maryanne Trump and the estate of Robert Trump, who died in August, argue their niece could have sued much earlier based on documents they handed over in other legal disputes, including a bitter court fight over the family patriarchs 1999 will.
But Mary Trump, a psychologist and author who wrote a damning tell-all book about the family last year, argues she didnt discover the alleged decades-old scheme until October 2018, when the New York Times published a Pulitzer Prize-winning report on Donald Trumps finances. The documents handed over to Mary Trump in earlier legal matters were either unrelated to the alleged fraud or contained false information that couldnt have tipped her off, she said
The Trump siblings cannot avoid accountability for their fraud simply because they thought that they had gotten away with it years ago, Mary Trumps lawyer Roberta Kaplan said in Fridays filing.
James Kiley, who represents Donald Trump and the estate of Robert Trump, didnt immediately return a call seeking comment. Maryanne Trump Barrys lawyer, Gary Freidman, declined to comment.
Mary Trump argues her uncles and aunt shouldnt benefit in court just because they successfully duped her for years.
The offensiveness of defendants past conduct -- stealing tens of millions of dollars from their own niece -- is perhaps surpassed only by the chutzpah of their current arguments for dismissal, Mary Trump said.
The fraud was only uncovered because three investigative reporters at the New York Times had access and information that Mary did not and never could have had, including tens of thousands of pages of confidential records and invoices, as well as interviews with Fred Trumps former employees and advisers, according to Mary Trumps brief.

Not that I was ever tempted to vote for him, but the absolute bottom line for me was his canceling his nephews health insurance while his nephews newborn was in intensive care.

(52,160 posts)this isn't some ambulance chaser or some conspiracy nut. If she is pushing this case, there almost certainly is something there. It should be noted, that Windsor, while it was clearly a civil rights case, it was a case about taxes and inheritance (she was suing for having to pay inheritance taxes that a man married to a woman wouldn't have had to pay) meaning there is some expertise in that firm in regards to those matters.

(22,035 posts)Legal cases are not determined by newspaper headlines.
The nuts and bolts of Dr. Trump's claims will be adjudicated. Then we'll see how it all turns out.
One thing I do love is that Trump will spend the next years tied up in legal and financial cases. His life of grift is probably going to start collapsing around him.
The dumbest thing Trump ever did-- and the list is incredibly long!-- was run for public office. It exposed far too much of his criminality to survive scrutiny. I expect his kids will be complicit in much of the trouble which also makes me happy.

(12,383 posts)at least at some time. She writes in her book about getting together for lunches, etc. Apparently that was before she found out that the whole family was involved in screwing her. That part may be the saddest... money is just stuff, but when you lose your family and all the people you thought were on your side, that is a really bitter pill. She knew all along Donald was an ass, but I think she still counted on other family members to be supportive.

(32,634 posts)This was published on the NY Times website on September 24, 2020:
https://int.nyt.com/data/documenttools/mary-trump-lawsuit/c50f4719d61f9c9a/full.pdf
It's a 52-page PDF document with many details and a complete synopsis of the lifelong fraud perpetrated against Mary Trump and her brother. Ever since her father died in 1981 when she was 16 years old, the Chump family, headed by Donald, has been cheating her out of her rightful inheritance. It wasn't until the NYT put the story together and published their findings in 2019 that Mary even realized what the family had done to her and her brother.
According to Mary's book which I read a few months ago, the Times reporters were able to see financial documents following the death of Mary Anne Trump (Donald's mother) and that's what got the ball rolling. The statue of limitations should not come into play here because the fraud was happening during most of Mary's life since the age of 16.
It's a very interesting read. Maryanne Trump Barry (Mary's aunt) is not a good-guy in this story. None of them are.
