The melody is from a rather maudlin drinking song. The best version of the anthem I ever heard (this wasn’t it) was on July 4, 1976. One of the morning shows had a young woman sing it. If I remember correctly, she was a first grade teacher from Indiana. She sang all four verses at that tempo. It took nearly ten minutes, but it was inspiring.
