I'd mentioned earlier in response to a thread from George II that I was going to watch Trump's speech today, and I did get through all of it, though it was excriciatingly boring, and I wasted even more of my time than I'd expected to since he was really late (time I used to take care of some cleaning that didn't really have to be done).
Then I drank, though not too heavily, through the speech.
The good news was that the audience often looked as bored as I felt. They'd looked MUCH more excited about half an hour before Trump finally showed up, shortly after they started playing the first of several songs used before his rally appearances, than they looked during long stretches of his speech.
More good news - I thought Trump looked rather sad as he looked out over the small audience before he started to speak. Wistful. Don't know whether it was the disappointing crowd (not that many people outside either, as far as I could tell from some RSBN coverage earlier) or the disappointing straw polls. Although 68% said they'd like to see him run for president in 2024, that number dropped to 55% when the question was whether the respondents would vote for him or another Republican in the primaries. Trump can't be too happy tonight with DeSantis's popularity.
The bad news, in terms of what I was hoping for, was that he didn't go off-script as much as I'd hoped. I was still hoping for that when he did a lot of riffing in just the first few sentences. But he didn't keep that up throughout the speech. Most of it was xenophobic scaremongering that you can bet Stephen Miller wrote. But there weren't the batshit crazy sound bites I'd been hoping we'd get out of the speech.
OTOH, there were all those expressions of boredom.
And that initial look on Trump's face showing he probably realizes his time is past.
And he might be so disappointed by how poorly he did in the straw poll that he'll spend some time going after DeSantis.

(21,717 posts)Looked like a very sparse crowd, with lots of open floor space and some empty seats up front.
Reminded me of the local VFW waiting for Timothy P and the Rural Route Three to perform.
I wondered if that would throw him, or if that was the reason he was an hour late coming out.
I didn't watch any of the speech. I just can't stomach the guy.

(24,293 posts)Was hoping to read DUer reviews of the event. It sounds like it met my expectations. Scheduling Trump for the last night was a tactical error, I think. Should have gone with Friday or Saturday night. Given his ego, this was probably a major letdown. Shortly, I except to see DJT,Jr. posting his freebased thoughts to the Internet.

(2,007 posts)Kind of a recipe for disaster, attendance-wise.
I've been at professional conferences where I had to empathize with some colleagues who got stuck with the "getaway day" time-slots with audience members slipping out of sessions early to catch their cabs to the airport.
If he really did show up over an hour late, he did some of it to himself, though.

(48,916 posts)Very xenophobic. He even referred back to his infamous escalator speech again, after once again telling his audience that Mexico and other Latin American countries "aren't sending their best." I'd be very surprised if most if not all of the speech wasn't written by Stephen Miller.
But I suppose you could categorize his immigration policy as talking to his followers about "who they all hate."
The election grievances and attacks on Republicans who weren't loyal enough to him were in the last half hour of the speech.

(16,919 posts)with a band of idiots that love him - he's definitely on his way out - and it couldn't happen to somebody more deserving. I'm sure he'll be encouraged by the crowds that watch him marching into his preliminary hearings - that'll make him feel better.....

(25,428 posts)Since January 6th, I've been saying that his political career ended that day, and I see little to change that opinion. He barely cleared a majority in the straw poll, his approval ratings have dropped precipitously, and it's only going to get worse as the insurrection trials are started and more connections are made. Then there are the civil and criminal cases....

(3,722 posts)any creative drinking games you participated in? Take another drink every time he says "fake news" or "deep state" or "hang Mike Pence"?
If so, hope you are not too hung over tomorrow.

It's the last sentence of your report that really interested me with its possibility. It's a potentially fraught balancing act, but I think I like the idea of him remaining loose for a time...a time long enough for him to rip some savage wounds into the GOP frontrunners.l
