A former close friend of right-wing Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) told The Washington Post the lawmaker lied about a car wreck that partially paralyzed him.
Cawthorns account of the 2014 wreck which he presented publicly in the chapel of his Christian college in Virginia three years later was that a close friend had crashed the car in which he was a passenger, leaving him to die in a fiery tomb, the Post reported over the weekend.
But the friend, Bradley Ledford, told the newspaper in his first public comments about the crash that he pulled Cawthorn from the wreckage.
It hurt very badly that he would say something as false as that, Ledford told the paper. That is not at all what happened. I pulled him out of the car the second that I was able to get out of the car.

(14,966 posts)He claims the accident disrupted his enrollment in/attendance of the US Naval Academy. In reality, his application was rejected, THEN he was in the accident. Attending the Naval Academy was never possible for him because he did not get in, period.
He claimed he was training for the Paralympics, specifically the marathon. He never once interacted with US Paralympics, registered, had his classification confirmed, or competed in a sanctioned event. If someone told you they were training for the Olympic marathon but they had never interacted with USATF or run in an official event, you would laugh in their fucking face.
He is, unsurprisingly, a Donald Trump-level brazen obvious liar. Easily disprovable lies.

(14,900 posts)Knows how to dog whistle for Blondie, too. Regarding then-Senate Raphael Warnock:
If we cede control of our Senate and really all of Washington, D.C. to the Democrats, its not going to represent the values of my home, North Carolina, and certainly not the values of Georgia, and the values of most of the people in the United States of America, Cawthorn said, adding: You see this Warnock fella whos coming down here and disguising himself as some moderate pastor from the South who doesnt believe in these radical ideas, but if you look at him really, what he actually believes, he is a radicals radical. He wants to defund our police. He says hes a pastor, yet hes all about abortion. This is somebody who does not represent what real Americans believe.

NC House candidate is under fire for posts some call sympathetic to white nationalists

But critics such as Davis say other symbols appear to suggest Cawthorns support for white nationalism.
They include the name of his real estate company, SPQR Holdings. SPQR, an abbreviation of a Latin phrase meaning the Senate and the Roman People, a phrase from the Roman Republic, is often used by white nationalists. His Twitter feed shows he follows 88 people. The number 88 is considered code for Heil Hitler, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
In a recent statement, Cawthorn said, SPQR is a term for Rome.
We cant let extremists on any side hijack or rewrite history because those who dont study history are doomed to repeat it . . . No one needs to study this history more closely than todays far left politicians who favor authoritarian, centralized and top-down policies.
A photo on his web site shows Cawthorn with a military-style rifle and pistol in a holster emblazoned with a Spartan-style helmet, a symbol often used by Oath Keepers, which the ADL describes as an anti-government right-wing fringe organization. And Cawthorn also has appeared with the so-called Betsy Ross flag, an early American banner also associated with white nationalism.

(3,166 posts)MadCaw is stupid, but look what happened to Trump!
I keep thinking that MadCaw has to have some secret backer who is funding him and telling him what to say. He is too young and inexperienced to have made it on his own. As far as I know, he's never really had a job, and he lives off the insurance payout from the accident.
It also seems to me that I read somewhere that Cawthorn isn't interested in passing laws to help the disabled. He likes to spread the story that HE has overcome his accident, so everyone should be able to, using those bootstraps.

(14,900 posts)Representative Madison Cawthorn has misled the public about training for the Paralympics, just as he misrepresented his education and business history.
By Sara Luterman
The Nation, Jan. 22, 2021
Before January 6, 25-year-old Representative Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) was known for being the youngest member of Congress, an ardent Trump supporter, and one of the few wheelchair users in elected office. Now he is in the headlines for giving a speech at the Stop the Steal rally prior to the insurrection at the Capitol that left five people dead. Throughout his short but meteoric political career, Cawthorn has used his disability to tell a story of overcoming: Despite great adversity, he claims to have achieved excellence through grit and physical strength. Many of his campaign ads featured images of Cawthorn intubated and hospitalized alongside videos of him lifting weights and hurtling forward in a racing wheelchair. But his claims of sporting successlike his accounts of education and business acumenhave often been misleading.
Cawthorn became disabled after a 2014 car crash left him paralyzed from the waist down. By Cawthorns own telling, he was a successful business owner headed to the Naval Academy before his injury tragically reordered his life. As it turns out, neither claim is true. The Asheville Watchdog reported that Cawthorn had already been rejected from the Naval Academy before his accident. And Cawthorns real-estate investment firm, SPQR Holdings LLC, which he only formed in August 2019, reported no income on its tax documents, and Cawthorn was the sole employee.
