Mildred Blount became the first African American member of the Motion Pictures Costumers Union. Her hats are in the collections of California African American Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.The goal is to create more period hats in miniature, which would serve as teaching aids, art, costume design and would also demonstrate the value of extended study in millinery.
Mildred Blount, application for Rosenwald fellowship, 1943
Mildred Blount (1907-1974), milliner, is famously recognized for her costume work for major film studios, in particular, the iconic film Gone With the Wind (1939), although she was not credited for her work. She is also noted for an impressive list of famous clientele, including Marian Anderson, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, and Gloria Vanderbilt. Her talent took notice when she exhibited 87 miniature hats from the period 1680 to 1937, at the 1939 New York Worlds Fair, which has defined the core of her legacy.

(113,769 posts)5. This is National Women's HERstory month, so thank you for bringing this amazing woman to
our attention.
Your OP brought to mind the 101 year old milliner who just made a special hat for Rep. Cori Bush.
In honour of this month, would you consider cross-posting this in Women's Rights And Issues? Thanks in advance.

This is a Mildred Blount appreciation thread.
Mildred was a Hollywood milliner (hat maker) + the first Black person to be admitted to the Motion Pictures Costumers Union. Some of her most famous work was in Gone with the Wind - For Which John Frederics tried to take credit

John Frederics was a hatter who worked with stars of the time. Mildred applied to the coveted position of his asst after seeing an ad in a newspaper
During Mildreds time as Johns assistant she worked to create the beautiful hats worn by Scarlet in Gone with the Wind

Replying to @bronze_bombSHEL
Mildred had a real respect + reverence for millinery.
She designed 87 mini hats, showcasing hat styles from 1680 to 1937, at the New York Worlds Fair in 1939. This exhibit is what got her noticed by Hollywood stars + directors

Here is Mildred with Gloria Vanderbuilt, the daughter + heiress of Reginald Vanderbuilt, on her wedding day in 1941.
The newspaper article describes in detail the veil that Mildred designed. Priceless lace
