CDC director warns of potential 'fourth surge' in coronavirus cases

The White House coronavirus response team is now holding a briefing to provide an update on case numbers and vaccine distribution.

Dr Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned that a recent uptick in coronavirus cases indicates another surge of cases could occur before a majority of the country is vaccinated.

“At this level of cases, with variants spreading, we stand to completely lose the hard-earned ground we have gained,” Walensky said.

“Now is not the time to relax the critical safeguards that we know can stop the spread of Covid-19 in our communities, not when we are so close. We have the ability to stop a potential fourth surge of cases in this country.”

seems that a lot of people think it's over. We still have a mask mandate, but it's not enforced. Restaurants are open at 100% capacity.

Numbers have been coming down and people are getting vaccinated, but IMO it's too soon to relax the restrictions.

The presence of vaccines makes the feeling that it’s all over very real.

We’ll see. I do thing a lot of people are going to have a hard time adjusting back to going out. They may have become quite accustomed to their life.

the number of buildings I've been in and that includes my home. I dont enjoy it, but I'll keep it up rather than waste my efforts of the past year.

I have gotten rather fond of having groceries delivered and will probably continue that after its safe to go to the store again.

I'm fortunate that my family also takes covid seriously. Everyone is supportive and taking precautions. When we all get vaccinated and feel safe, we're going to have one helluva family get together.

Because my mom is one.

At least she got shot 1 before breaking her leg and potentially being exposed...

can’t wait to see friends who also are vaccinated, but 0n a mostly 1-on-1 basis until we get a better read on this. And I’m going double-masked to Costco!

Globally, daily new cases are on the rise again, from 359,762 reported daily new cases on Feb 20 to 383,724 on Feb 27 -- an increase of 6.7%. Though it's a relatively tiny upturn compared to the decline from the January 11 739,428 peak. Still, it's troublesome. (All three numbers are trailing 7 day moving averages)

The U.S. decline has stopped and has leveled off since about Feb 19 (also trailing 7 day moving averages of daily new cases)
