says Democrats should ignore the parliamentarians ruling on minimum wage & Democrats must make it happen
/2 Sanders: There will be a roll call vote, and well see who votes for it and doesnt.
/3 Sanders: This is the soul of the Democratic Party.
/4 Sanders also said there would be political fallout for all those senators who vote against the minimum wage increase. I would suggest that those who vote against it from a political point of view, thats a mistake. The American people want to see that minimum wage raised.
/5 Sanders: Let me be very clear - if we fail in this legislation, I will be back. Were going to keep going it takes 10 votes. We are going to raise that minimum wage very shortly to $15 an hour.

(19,931 posts)There is no path to $15 in the reconciliation bill, lets get the bill passed, and find other vehicles to move the minimum wage.

(33,745 posts)At a time when millions of workers are earning starvation wages, when the minimum wage has not been raised by Congress since 2007 and stands at a pathetic $7.25 an hour, it is time to raise the minimum wage to a living wage.
Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed by the decision of the parliamentarian who ruled that the minimum wage provision was inconsistent with the Byrd Rule and the reconciliation process.
But even more importantly, I regard it as absurd that the parliamentarian, a Senate staffer elected by no one, can prevent a wage increase for 32 million workers.
My own personal view is that the Senate should ignore the parliamentarians advice, which is wrong in a number of respects. I am not sure, however, that my view at this point is the majority view in the Democratic Caucus.
Obviously, as soon as we can, we must end the filibuster that currently exists in the U.S. Senate. Given the enormous crises facing working families today, we cannot allow a minority of the Senate to obstruct what the vast majority of the American people want and need.

(32,017 posts)An increase in wages will lead directly to an increase in income tax revenues. How can that NOT be considered a budgetary issue subject to reconciliation?

(94,662 posts)...he knows well what would happen.
There would be an objection, a 60-vote threshold vote to overturn the ruling (which would fail), then a motion to table needing only 51 votes (which he knows at least two would come from the Democratic side) which would succed.
