(93,900 posts)Do they trip over things they don't see or notice or just weakness of body ?
This is one of the things I most worry about when it comes to some older people in my family.

(14,200 posts)It's good to work on your balance as you age.

(93,900 posts)been in good physical shape and just overall active types in their most of their work and personal life.
There is probably a reluctance to face the reality of aging related issues and how they need to just slow down a bit and be more careful.

(27,296 posts)I learned 2 forms. Started with a class of 2+ months 1x week. I did the first seriously when I was in my earlier thirties. for 5 years till I then slowly petered out. I picked up the second form in my early '40s from someone who was learning it elsewhere. I did a very inventive drawing method to break down each move when I'd get done. I know I still have them. I then did those seriously for about 5 more years before I fizzled out. I might do a few moves a few times a yr now.
My balance is still good to excellent at the younger end of"old" (almost 68).
And tai chi is great for keeping limber. I have no chronic aches and pains! Sure I get them if I twist something the wrong way.
So I should be doing it - if I could do it 3 - 4x's/wk that'd be really good. I guess even if I start at 1x - 2xs/ wk. I have to find the notes, and drawings I made.
Balance problems, vision problems, lower joint problems are the 3 reasons I can think of for pontentially more frequent falls.

(14,200 posts)I recall reading somewhere that balance is the leading indicator of physical age so Tai Chi seems perfect for that. I'm gonna look into what's available for video programs. Thanks for the tip!

(12,981 posts)So far no falls, but I expect this is the beginning for most old folks.

(297,921 posts)What are some causes of falls?
The normal changes of aging, like poor eyesight or poor hearing, can make you more likely to fall. Illnesses and physical conditions can affect your strength and balance. Poor lighting or throw rugs in your home can make you more likely to trip or slip.
The side effects of some medicines can upset your balance and make you fall. Medicines for depression, sleep problems and high blood pressure often cause falls. Some medicines for diabetes and heart conditions can also make you unsteady on your feet.
You may be more likely to fall if you are taking four or more medicines. You are also likely to fall if you have changed your medicine within the past two weeks.
What can I do to prevent falls?

(21,283 posts)I've always been a klutz and if there's some little bump in the sidewalk, my toe will find it and I'll go flying. I just have to be really careful. I've noticed my depth perception is not as good as it once was, and that can cause problems too.
malaise
(297,921 posts)Every one of us has fallen at least once - back in the day I fell running down a hill - hit a stone and had a mild ankle twist. We never noticed the bumps until recently. We didn't notice that some areas are uneven but as we have aged there have been many near falls and falls. Additionally the sun rising affects the light big time so we have to be way more careful that when we were younger.
At home we all need to be more careful about throw rugs, electric cords. and stuff sticking out in odd places.

(21,283 posts)and I absolutely will not get a house that has a step down or up into a room. I don't know who ever thought that was a good idea.
