'It's unsurprising': Joaquin Castro points out the lack of Latino representation at Golden Globes

A San Antonio Congressman is sticking up for the Latino community.

While the nation watched the Golden Globes Sunday evening, Joaquin Castro noticed a lack of Latino actors, writers, and creators in the award show. And, he took to Twitter to share his thoughts.

"Latinos are almost completely missing at the @goldenglobes – it's unsurprising and unacceptable," the San Antonio native politician said. "The film industry must address the pernicious lack of opportunity and representation of Latino Americans. The stories that Hollywood tells affect how entire communities are perceived."

Castro added in a comment on his tweet that he uses the word "pernicious" because the status quo is toxic, harmful, and dangerous to Latinos in American society. In another tweet, he noted Hollywood as a system is very "insular," "exclusionary," and "regressive." Castro said some individuals in the system are progressive, but pointed out the system as a whole is among the least progressive industries in America.

of corruption in the displacement and razing of an entire Mexican American neighborhood in Los Angeles for the building of Dodger Stadium.
It was a great script and fascinating story by the same writer who did THE MAJESTIC for Frank Darabont.
Almost every producer and studio executive we shared it with loved it.
Nobody bought or made it.
We got the SAME exact excuse from every single one of them
"They aren't any Mexican American movie stars that can greenlight this" they would say.
"This is HOW YOU MAKE THEM STARS!" I would reply.
But they are right, there are no M-A movie stars.
But it's because Hollywood won't create them.
it's a chicken and the egg thing.
I got so fucking mad but the writer was sanguine about it actually.
He'd been around so he knew what he was getting into when he decided to write but he thought the story needed telling.
We wound up taking a left turn and had him rewrite it for the stage.
It was scheduled for production last year by a significant LA theater group last year but got pushed back because of Covid
Our thinking was we make a star with the play and maybe we can convince Hollywood to make it then.
it's a frustrating place
Castro is correct.
The industry must correct this.
