General Discussion

and will do so again now. We need to figure out just what our standard is going forward in overturning elections when political figures engage in conduct, that while legal, is terrible. The day before yesterday it was Franken, yesterday it was Northam, today it is Cuomo, tomorrow it will be ?. I tend to be pretty maximalist on elections ought to matter, even if we don't like the outcomes of them or we later find that the people elected have terrible habits.
Yet again we find ourselves in the position where we are deciding that maybe we should undo the election of Andrew Cuomo as governor. Honestly, this isn't about Cuomo or Franken or anyone else. It is about, in this case, the people of NY. Cuomo won his primary and general elections by vast numbers of votes. His Lt Gov. didn't. She pretty much is where she is because of him. The people of NY voted for him, not his Lt. Governor.
For me, short of criminality or such mal feasance of duty as to it should be criminal, people should get to keep their jobs. At the very least we should have a real investigation here. He isn't some CEO who we get to choose who will replace him. He is a governor who gets replaced by a specific person with no public input at all. An accidental governor. Maybe she would be terrific, but her record suggest she wouldn't be. But again, on the merits, that actually doesn't matter to me. What matters to me is whom did the people of NY decide should be governor and when should that choice be taken from them? The answer to the first part of that question is Cuomo, the answer to the 2nd part, in my mind at least, is when they have elected a criminal, or elected a person who is unable to do the job and an investigation has been conducted which shows that. I don't think Cuomo should run again. I think if Cuomo engaged in criminal conduct he needs to go. If he has merely behaved in a way that would get a CEO fired, I am not so sure.

(14,077 posts)On the one hand, I dont want him to resign unless something criminal comes out. But on the other, I dont want him at the top of the ticket when election time comes up, possibly losing to a Republican because of the scandal. Im not a resident of NY so I have no say. Id like to see polls on how NYers feel.

I do agree, though. It appears that Cuomo is a pig. It's almost amusing to see Republicans falling all over themselves trying to condemn him after they have given pass after pass to their elected officials over conduct that seems to be much worse.
Cuomo is up for re-election in 2022. I think it should be up to the people of NY to decide if he stays or goes.
