Herein lies a big part of the problem. There is a substantial portion of our society that is susceptible to manipulation and a cadre of media personalities who have learned how to profit handsomely from that susceptibility. Stupidity, hatred, resentment, misinformation, the elevation of mediocrity or less as the equivalent of excellence are all tricks of the trade. Hard to tell who among them are true believing snake oil salesmen and who are just skilled snake oil salesmen. Problem is that their profit comes at a cost to the rest of us- a very steep cost.
