(CNN)In a critical voting rights case, conservative Supreme Court justices on Tuesday suggested they were ready to uphold two provisions of an Arizona voting law that Democrats argue violate the historic Voting Rights Act.
Supporters of voting rights are fearful that the court's new 6-3 solidified conservative majority will weaken a key provision of the act that prohibits laws that result in racial discrimination.
For over two hours of telephonic arguments, the justices grappled not only with the Arizona law at hand but with a standard that courts should apply when considering such laws going forward. (1,654 posts)... the Supreme Court was the most heartbreaking.
If Clinton had won (thanks for nothing, Comey), we'd have a 5-4 majority on the Supreme Court right now. (I'm figuring Clinton would have appointed Scalia and RBG's successors, and Kennedy would not have retired.) Most likely, that Court would have outlawed partisan gerrymandering and generally upheld voting rights. Now voting rights are under attack at every level from states to the Supreme Court.
Having said all that, the two laws here are not the worst of them. The real issue is what the Court will say about what's left of the Voting Rights Act in its ruling. At least that's how I interpret the NYT article about this:

The harvesting is more of an issue, although Im as much worried above white wing harvesting.
Honestly, I think our voters and local Democratic Party organizations are at least as smart, if not smarter, than white wingers.
