I had my physical today. Im 54 and have lost almost 30 pounds in the last 14 months. Diet change and more exercise.
Anyway, the nurse asked me if I plan on getting the Covid vaccine. I told her I would drive to Jacksonville right now to get it(3 hours away). I was kidding but I would do it.
Apparently because Im technically obese and have hypertension I qualify under our Governors new order allowing those under 65 with co-morbidities to get the vaccine. I have hypertension but medication keeps it below 130/80. So not horrible. And Im 511 and 220 but very big boned. No one would call me fat, just real stocky and muscular. So my Doctor gave me a signed letter allowing me to be vaccinated.
The only reason Im considering it is the wife. She is over 60, working everyday(Im still furloughed) and Im worried about her.
If it were just me I would put the letter aside. But now Im torn with concerned for the wife. I would welcome input.

(11,949 posts)Honest to god she looks 45.
But DU has convinced me. Ill get it ASAP.
I just feel bad for the older folks at real high risk who cant. But I have to protect my wife.

(153,160 posts)it's not your fault the rollout has not been optimal....you just do what you have to do to protect your wife and your loved ones.....which means getting the vax as soon as you can

(266 posts)Supply is going to surge quickly. You won't be depriving anyone. Get it, then do what you can to get your wife vaxxed.
So, I guess you now owe me two cents. Cheers!

(102,263 posts)Not to be rude, but get it as soon as you are able/eligible. As a front-line HCW who has seen the ravages--even among those who swore to me that they were staying home and taking "every precaution," this is a no-brainer.
If your wife is not yet eligible, still get it. You are protecting her as well.
GulfCoast66
(11,949 posts)Dont want to jump the line. But DU has reinforced my initial thoughts. I have to protect the wife and although over 60 is not 65 so not eligible.
Thank you.

(2,101 posts)If you can't arrange a shot for your wife, your getting the shot will help minimize the chance you bring it home to her and also ensure you're there to help her out if she gets ill. Everyone who gets vaccinated, regardless of category, contributes to protecting all of us including those who cannot get the vaccine or are too stupid to take it when offered to their group because some propaganda says not to.

(13,493 posts)you qualify and you are doing your part. no guilt.

(82,849 posts)We're all going to be vaccinated in the next 12 weeks. You aren't taking a shot away from anyone else. Think of it as heading for the checkout line at a crowded supermarket. You get in the line you think is going to go fastest or that's the shortest. After standing there for a few seconds, another checker comes on duty and pulls your cart over to her register. Everyone waiting to check out is still going to check out, the store isn't going to close without processing everyone's purchases, and you just got gifted three minutes.

(6,357 posts)Neighbor...47...perfect health...took his mother to get her shot. She got her shot and the nurse asked him if he had his because she had a couple extra doses in the vial that were going to go to waste. So he took her up on it, got his card, and got scheduled for his 21-day second shot.
It's a crap shoot but it does happen. Results may vary by state depending on local rules but it happens in OH.
(There's also the camping out at the local pharmacy around closing time - several friends have "scavenged" their shots that way in OH and GA).
Good luck.

(4,075 posts)If she can go with you take her with you,,,, I've heard several stories from folks I know about vaccinating the whole car,,,,
If she cannot go, then get it anyway,,,, you're protecting her by doing it.

(25,976 posts)Go get the vaccination regardless, GulfCoast. Your doctor saw fit to give you the opportunity now. You should grab it with both hands, for your wife's sake and your own.

(2,592 posts)from a limited supply, thanks to President Biden. My wife called Walgreens on a friend's recommendation this evening and asked if they had any extra, and the pharmacist said if you get here in 15 minutes you are good. They just could not promise the 2nd shot. I got my first shot 2 weeks ago. We are both thankful. You will be doing yourself, your wife and your community a favor. Go for it.

I cook healthy food at home every night. Nothing processed. I was told I eat more healthily than most of my doctors patients...just too much of it! Oh, and beer!
My diet has totally changed. Not what I eat. But how much.

(115,686 posts)If you qualify medically, it doesn't matter that you don't look overweight or that your hypertension is controlled. If your BMI is 30 or more you are technically obese and you qualify. Get the vaccine for your own sake, your wife's, that of the medical people who would have to take care of you if you got sick, and the people you might spread it to. Do it!

(47,050 posts)To yourself, to your wife, to society.
If you get very sick, your hospital care is more expensive than the vaccine.
And if you get sick, you could infect others and possible kill them.
Sorry to be harsh, but there it is.

(52,161 posts)I was made eligible on 24 Feb made appointment on 25 Feb for 27 Feb. I don't regret doing so at all. I teach in person (though with small class sizes and compliant students) and am in your position medically (though heavier than you). I did so without regret or guilt.

(1,493 posts)I had a similar but different moral dilemma a few weeks back. About a month ago I got a Slack message from a former college professor about the need for vaccine volunteering in my county. I jumped at the chance; filled out all the paperwork and then a few days later signed for a shift.
When I got to the volunteer location I was told that volunteers get to get vaccinated. I was both thrilled and felt terribly guilty that there were others who might be more in need.
But I wanted to be a regular volunteer, which does mean potential exposure. So there you go... one Moderna down and the 2nd one scheduled.

I was concerned that so many older folks who dont have technical abilities cant get it. I already have a good idea of how to get an appointment.
Thanks DU for the reassurance. It does help.
Since my OP the wife pretty much read me the riot act to get the vaccine!

Any increase in vaccinated numbers all contributes to an end in sight for all of us. You met certain requirements and got a qualification letter, so go for it.
