"Fuck Those Dr. Seuss Books" and Other Proper Responses to the Fake "Cancel Culture" Bullshit
snip//
So this whole "cancel culture" thing is so fucking dumb and it's just another way that conservatives are exploiting the ignorance of their voters. So what if there's a warning in front of a couple of episodes of The Muppet Show to indicate that it's fucked up that Johnny Cash sang in front of a Confederate flag or that Spike Milligan did yellow face and fake Chinese voice. So what if the packaging for Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head went unisex? You can still put high-heeled shoes and a mustache on your plastic potato, just like you could before. And, really, truly, fuck those Dr. Seuss books. How is it not a problem that the books contain racist images? Let's stop acting like there aren't a million other books that are just as good that don't have crazy Arabs or weird indigenous Alaskans. Besides, you're not losing your Horton or Lorax or Grinch. Your childhood is protected, so you can stop being an asshole because (checks notes) the Seuss estate pulled the books out of publication.
The point here, of course, is not that some conservative dicks are upset that liberals believe things. That's been the story since forever. No, what we're seeing here is the distraction, the thing that makes you forget who the GOP really is. Remember that Republicans don't give a fuck about appealing to people through Ideas That Might Make Their Lives Better. No, they prefer the Shit That Makes Idiots Mad and Fuck Your Voting Rights approaches. The vaccine program is a big success? The COVID bailout prevents the nation from being economically fucked by the pandemic? Oh, fuck, what's a scummy GOP fucknut going to do? Time to cue up the culture wars, motherfuckers. "Yes, it's true that Republicans supported policies that flat out murdered hundreds of thousands of people, but, hey, look, Kermit's nuts are being cut off by Cancel Culture and AOC," they'll say and that'll be dutifully re-vomited by right-wing media led by Tucker Carlson's one-mustache-short-of-a-Fuhrer face.
This becomes the same-sex marriage or anti-abortion initiatives on ballots that distract people from voting for Democrats. Yeah, we've been through this before. In fact, every fucking time now with Republicans, who would rather toss shit than discuss an issue honestly. Or, these days, rather than talk about the same reality.
In so many cases, "cancel culture" just means "Oh, shit, they caught us" to the people who got caught. And they're pissed that now that they're caught, they can't just be white people who, say, casually use the n-word. Like, well, the Republican Party.

(33,112 posts)Y'know how I know this is the case?
Because, if somebody wasn't trying to use the end-of-print of a few Dr. Seuss books to distract me, I never would have heard about it. But, alas, it's been blowing my hair back from the bullhorn on the Right Wing Wurlitzer for the past two days.
It doesn't take a microscope to see these things that fall into my simple lap. I lead a relatively quiet life and if I've heard about something, it's because someone WANTS me to hear about it. Really, really, badly.
The republican skreetchophones are blaring because they know if they don't, they are at the end of the line. After they propped up a failed pretend president for four years and on his way out the door he plus a select few of his cohorts kicked them in the gonads by inciting a violent insurrection. Because, he couldn't lose with grace.

(19,024 posts)This is the estate of Dr. Seuss controlling their own intellectual property because times change and they want to protect their brand. Black people are animals in cages in one of these books, that is not acceptable. Dr. Seuss was not evil, but he was insensitive for the times and wrote stuff considered racist today. His estate has every right to control their intellectual property as they see fit.

(12,165 posts)DU was so frustrating yesterday because of people parroting the right wing concept of cancel culture. Never mind that the right will always find some stupid, pithy term to amplify through its echo chamber.

I think I'd feel better if glaring problems were getting resolved. Things like spousal abuse, police murdering minorities, parents murdering their children, gangs attacking the government, and after those behaviors were canceled, fine tune our society by looking at causes that might have a butterfly effect on why Johnny is a murderer, or why Jenny thinks its okay to beat her children. We seem to be leaving the ogres and swatting gnats. Maybe swatting gnats will help future generations get further along, but for the here and now, would like to see some of the ogres laid low.

(5,639 posts)They 'use' cancel culture when it benefits them. Then go around and cancel everything they can. Hell, they want to cancel the entire democratic party and anything liberal or progressive.
FUCK them.

(11,562 posts)Man, I love his writing, although I very much believe he is preaching to the choir, to use the most hackneyed phrase I could think of. What is the likelihood that he is going to change more than a handful of RW minds over his career?
The idea of "Resting Fuhrer Face" is fantastic, though. I know it's not exactly what he said, but I think it's short and sweet enough to start peppering tweets and other endeavours aimed at the masses.

(62,510 posts)I said, "so what, it's a toy. who cares?" Meaning, it's a none issue an frankly, it's a good thing.
but in her faux holier than though moral outrage, she bleated about how our "leaders" have failed us about letting this happen.
I responded, "there are no "leaders" responding in the article, just the CEO's of the toy companies."
she ignores that comment and goes on a screed about how she was forced to go through tolerance training at her job.
It was at that point, I ended it. and said, I'm blocking you. that she was clearly a toxic person.
she was once Ms. Environmentalist/Liberal/anti-discrimination. Now, she's nut bag qanon conspiracy under every carpet crazy right wing zealot.
