"The fundamental issue is do people get to vote or not?"

Dems can eliminate filibuster to pass HR1 & John Lewis Voting Rights Act to stop GOP voter suppression

Or they can allow GOP to undermine democracy for next decade

Stakes couldn't be higher

Klobuchar calls the GOP’s assault on voting rights “the defining issue of the year.” She adds, “We had an insurrection at the Capitol with rioters who were trying to literally dismantle our democracy. The fundamental issue is do people get to vote or not and are we going to make it easy for them to vote or are we going to put up barriers to make it impossible?”

After being passed in the House on a party-line vote, the measure is expected to be blocked once again by Republicans in the Senate—that is, unless Senate Democrats eliminate the filibuster, which would require a supermajority of 60 votes for passage. In the 50–50 divided Senate, it is highly improbable that the Democrats will be able to win over 10 GOP votes to defeat a Republican filibuster. So a Senate clash over HR 1 is likely to become a key front in the ongoing battle over the Senate filibuster. And Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), a chief sponsor of the voting rights legislation, tells me she supports killing the filibuster to pass this legislation.

“I would get rid of the filibuster,” Klobuchar says. “I have favored filibuster reform for a long time and now especially for this critical election bill.”

I recently worked with some young men who were movers and I asked them if they voted not one of them said they did and the reason was both parties are the same and don’t do anything for them.

4. One young African american guy admitted he liked the orange maggot and thought he did great things

Then he told me a story of going to Virginia City Nevada to a restaurant and he and his family were harassed by orange anus supporters who followed them down the street with them carrying his Nazi flags. They ate their meal quickly and left. I remember looking at him and asking him why he supported such a racist. He then shrugged. I personally think that folks like him only hear right wing talk radio and become indoctrinated in the phony bs. I decided to not engage any further as we had to finish the move but it stunned me.

6. It's like an awful lot of people just cannot make logical connections anymore (it they ever could)

The generous interpretation is that way too few people actually 'pay attention' even remotely to the degree way that all of us here on DU do. They're operating on such a limited knowledge base that basically any 'interpretation' becomes possible for them, all it takes is a little nudge in a particular direction. They don't have the overall understanding and knowledge of what's going on in the world to allow them to reject the Right's bullshit out-of-hand.

If you basically don't know jack other than having seen a car dealership set on fire during a BLM protest on the news, then later some wingnut on 'the news' is telling you that BLM was behind the Capitol attack, you might think 'sure, why not, I saw BLM set some cars on fire a few months ago ... makes sense!'

I really think that's the level of utter cluelessness (and lack of critical thinking skills) that we're up against here.

That cares more about Unity with Republicans than taking care of the people who put them in power. If I wanted to hear what Republicans had to offer, I would vote for them. 2022 is going to be a test, 2024 is going to be an outright necessity. Stop worrying about your re-election, focus on getting what we need pushed through. The reason Republicans are fine with having control 4 years out of every 12 is because they ram what they want through during those 4 years and they know the other 8 years the Democrats are going to care about Republican feelings.

7. Klobuchar gets it: either HR1 passes or the voter suppression laws stand and democracy falls.

Even if it passes, expect the SCROTUS to eventually gut it. By that time, if we have enough state houses, we might unsuppress some voters that way.
