FBI Counterterrorism chief Jill Sanborn just made a crucial point: the FBI does not believe it has the authority to monitor PUBLIC social media posts unless there is predication such as an open investigation. Thats largely the bureau missed so many of the threats.

(1,202 posts)The FBI and Secret Service are two vastly overrated organizations as far as ethics and honor. Much like Navy SEALS, they have done good things, but are more Hollywood hype than substance. We hear a lot about their successes and not nearly enough about their failures. USSS is a rather vast organization as is the FBI. There are some real dumb shits among them.

(2,267 posts)For the last three years people have been using NLP (natural language processing) a type of machine learning to identify hate speech and calls for violence.
Groups from a variety of university systems were using open source software to identify dangerous posts online.
If researchers can do it using NSF funding, then the FBI and NSA can certainly do it.
Someone at the top told them not to look for these threats among white supremacists. Did anyone ask who gave the order not to do it.
