Ron DeSantis has not yet opened the vaccination program to them. CVS is giving inoculations in two dozen cities across the state.
CVS said it is following Biden administration guidelines released this week, which are broader for educators than Floridas. For teachers, Florida limits the vaccine to classroom teachers 50 and older who work in kindergarten through 12th grade. The federal guidelines allow day care workers, preschool teachers and educators in elementary, middle and high schools to be vaccinated with no age limit.
The Florida Education Association, the state teachers union, said it was still trying to confirm younger teachers are getting shots.
Tracey Burger, a 49-year-old Miami high school English teacher, said Wednesday that she was disappointed when DeSantis announced last week that she would not make the cut. Burger has barely left her house since schools closed a year ago when the pandemic began.
This decision by CVS is NOT what DeSatan "ordered". CVS is providing vaccine (they say) to teachers in violation of the state "rules" and following the Biden direction.

(5,524 posts)They are delivering on a completely separate supply from the feds. The Biden Administration has dictated that this is the way they want that supply used.

(9,067 posts)...his comment was that he wanted seniors vaccinated first, and basically teachers should suck it up and go back to face-to-face no matter what. He simply has no control over Biden giving vaccine to CVS or opening federal vaccination sites, so state mandates are in conflict with Biden's directive.
Public schools and universities in Florida have collective bargaining, and most contracts already require a safe environment. Several cases are working through the ranks now, but most rulings have left opening decisions up to local elected boards and not to the state, and some boards are still reluctant with vaccines on the horizon. It's not just the decision to open, but the threat of lawsuits.
DeSatan knows that most teachers don't vote Republican, so he's not in a hurry to help them out, but he also doesn't want to make the parents (who also vote) mad because schools are not open. If he gets his way, Florida will use the virus as an excuse to move as many kids as possible to charter and private schools.

(5,524 posts)It was just that the original article and OP presented this as CVS being heroic and sticking a thumb in deSantis eye to do the right thing.
I was just pointing out that CVS is merely performing a different protocol for a different client. Biden should get all the credit for sticking this particular thumb in deSantis eye.
