Sanders: Why it's time to eliminate the tipped minimum wage of $2.13 an hour (Original Post)

Mar 2021
OP
Mr.Bill
(24,284 posts)1. Is that currently in the bill?
I agree it should be phased out. No one can say a restaurant can't afford to do that and stay in business, because we do it in California.

(11,010 posts)2. I've been looking at Minimum wages around the country
and there are a few places that have eliminated it, or bumped it up. Still at least 1/2 of the states haven't though.

Section 3. Tipped Employees
Tipped Wages. The Act increases the tipped wage from $2.13 to $4.95 in 2021. For each
succeeding year, the Act increases the tipped wage by the lesser of either $2.00 or the difference
between the tipped wage and the 6(a)(1) wage. Once the tipped wage reaches the 6(a)(1) wage in
2027, the Act eliminates the tipped wage by stipulating that the tipped wage will be the 6(a)(1)
wage.

(9,116 posts)3. Tipping, as a practice, should be eliminated.
Imagine leaving the bulk of your pay subject to the fickle whims of asshat restrautant patrons.

(9,953 posts)5. I think...
... tipping should be done away with completely. Whatever the percent is... it should be added to wages and prices.
