(53,214 posts)What a nightmare that would have been. I was on pins and needles waiting for the results and I was scared to hope for a Democratic victory as I might jinx it.

(53,214 posts)We didn't do nearly as well as I had expected in both the house and the senate races. I figured Georgia of all places was probably a lost cause. They are so good at voter suppression.

I'm reading that the final bill could be voted on this weekend, but probably next week.
Still, we are getting things done!

Manchin and Sinema stuck with us, it must be noted. Even shaky Democrats have to vote with the Democrats SOME of the time!

(17,802 posts)Manchin for example has NEVER been the vote that killed a piece of dem legislation. Sure, he will vote against us if it doesn't matter, but who cares.
He is always there when it counts.
That isn't semi dem in any way.

(33,707 posts)This would normally start the 20 hours of debate time, which would be followed by vote-a-rama. But Sen. Johnson requiring the reading of the bill will delay that timeline.

(20,595 posts)Your garden variety GQP voter would rather lose out on the $1400 than see the libs happy that they got something passed that benefits 90 percent of the population directly.
Your garden variety GQP pol will make the calculation their voters will never punish them at the ballot box for this (or anything else). Thats why the thought of resigning never entered Cruz mind after the Cancun fiasco. He knows Texas Republicans wont punish him for that even if some of them were annoyed with him while they were sitting in their freezing homes.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(28,493 posts)that their party doesn't really give a flying fuck about them. Yes, there are those who want to "own the libs" but I don't think there are as many of them as those who are simply ignorant of what their own party is willing to do to them.

(22,957 posts)It has been made plain as day time and time again that repuq's "representatives" do not care one iota about their constituents. They still vote them into office.
That is not gonna change over $1400.

(16,385 posts)Its already a purplish state, imo. It gets more purple every year. I think there is a decent chance Cruz gets tossed out in the next election, especially if Texas Dems get as organized as their compatriots in Georgia.

(1,983 posts)If President Biden and the congressional Dems get this $1.9 trillion plan out the door in the next few weeks, it has to be considered a big victory. Not just for them, but for the American public, too.
I know most of us wanted a few more things in it (the minimum wage increase in particular), but after the many months of obstructionism and foot-dragging last year by the GOP, this is, as Biden himself might put it, a big (deleted) deal.
BumRushDaShow
(169,755 posts)Not "weeks". It needs to be signed, sealed, and delivered by March 14, when the current extended UE benefits expire.
I expect they are going to try to aim to get it through both chambers by next Friday or Saturday (12th/13th, although it could potentially be earlier if the House agrees to accept this Senate version and vote on it without any amendments).
Otherwise like what happened the last time, states will have to again shut down the extended UE and then try to start it back up again once they get the info from the feds on the new funding sources for accounting purposes, with big delays for reprogramming their systems to restart it.
Here in PA, with an antiquated UE system, I understand it was a bit of a nightmare for people due to the Dec. 26th lapse and then later CARES Act extension that finally got signed into law on Dec. 30th (with the check amount being retroactive but still delayed due to the lapse).
