Student loan relief is not part of the stimulus bill, but it has been a top concern for progressives. The poll finds fairly widespread backing for canceling $10,000 in college debt for anyone with an outstanding federal loan 61% support and 37% oppose. However, increasing the amount of debt cancellation to $50,000 per borrower drops public support to 45% and increases opposition to 53%.

The positive polling of canceling 10,000 has to be a strong motivated and it allow him to continue to use the framing that it's popular with the majority of Americans.

(33,643 posts)Not 'cancelling'.
Not sure who decided on this framing or if it's just that of these particular pollsters, but no Democrat should call it
'cancellation' of the debt.

(14,144 posts)This can't be stated enough. Dems must use more caution to frame the issue to their advantage..
"Cancellation" of debt is very bad framing,...
... acknowledgement of the need to allocate "relief", "support", or assistance for heavy student debt especially for lower income college students is a much better way to frame the issue.
It is like the sloppy "cancel the police", "de-fund the police" came back to bite us hard last fall. The hard right used that as a weapon to not elect libs, progressives, Dems to the state senate or house legislatures,... or to the federal Congress of either the House or Senate.
They screamed bloody murder that the Libs intend to drastically de-fund the police. Murder, robberies, plus breaking and entering will sky rocket off the charts coast to coast.
No more Law And Order, the suburbs will become horrific crime zones the value of your property will plummet.

(33,643 posts)Granted, I mostly heard those from Bernie's folks, but ... all Democrats get painted with this brush whenever a prominent Democrat uses terrible name like these.
Republicans long ago figured out that the best names are the ones where, if you ask someone if they're for or against it, they're going to feel obliged to say that they're for it, because the name sounds like something everyone should want.
Our side needs to recognize the utility, and then deploy, this VERY simple strategy, like yesterday.

It sounds so good,... how could anyone respond other than full affirmative.

(33,643 posts)It's not 'Free College', it's the 'Education Freedom Act' or 'Freedom of Education Act'.
It's not 'Medicare for All', it's 'Medicare Early Buy-In' or 'Medicare Choice Act'
Then again, my personal favorite is THE PUBLIC OPTION, but somehow the RePuQs have fairly successfully made this term anathema.
So maybe my choices aren't the best either
But I know a crap name when I see one.
Credit where it's due, though ... Affordable Care Act ... now THAT was a pretty good one.

(16,935 posts)and depending on how much debt a student is under and forgiving a percentage? I could see a sliding scale of $10,000.00 to $50,000.00 benefitting a lot of people, maybe in a better way.
