Senator Mitt Romney is pushing back on giving all states COVID relief as the Senate prepares to begin voting on President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package.
The Utah senator argues the states that did not suffer any revenue loss or deficit as a result of the coronavirus pandemic should not be receiving the money allocated for them in the American Rescue Plan.
"The amount of excess in the Administration's $1.9 trillion #COVID19 plan is outrageous," Romney tweeted on Friday. "States that are doing well financially will get billions of dollars. California had a record surplus last year, but would still get $27 billion. It just doesn't make any sense."
The bill before the Senate currently includes $195.3 billion for states and the District of Columbia. Counties and cities would share $120 billion in aid, while tribes would get $20 billion and territories $4.5 billion.

(53,764 posts)That's such a republic mindset. We can't forget, Romney is still a republican despite occassionaly showing some spine.

(115,669 posts)The 47 percent "who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them... Ill never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
My state is forecasting a short-term surplus but a shortfall for 22-23, no doubt because of covid. So we'll need that relief money for when we run out of the surplus.

(5,706 posts)But we have an actual government document, that starts off by saying, We The People.
So our government is really ours, to help us, when we are in need of its help.

That makes sense.

(5,706 posts)The money is for people, not states, Mitt!
There are more people populating California and suffering more than in any other state.
So shut your asshole up!

(15,319 posts)that any state that receives more in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes will lose 1 complete military base for every cent they short "our" government.
Once those are all gone, "taker" states would then lose one federal office and all associated jobs for every remaining cent.
We might as well quit fucking around and pretending we are dealing with honest, democratic opposition who have any interest in a democratic-republican form of government.
It's sad, but part of me really feels that we should go ahead and go full on authoritarian before they do, because you know they've already tried...and will again.
