Then Manchin walked over to talk with Sen. Rob Portman, who has an alternative jobless benefits

The Dem plan would extend the jobless benefits through September and the first $10,200 of jobless benefits would be tax free. There is concern among Democrats that Manchin might not support the Dem compromise and back Portman’s plan instead.

A number of Democrats huddled around Manchin on the floor. Sens. Jon Tester, Kyrsten Sinema, Catherine Cortez Masto all were huddled around him. Then Manchin walked over to talk with Sen. Rob Portman, who has an alternative jobless benefits to extend the benefit at $300 per week

Manchin is getting a lot of interest from his fellow Democrats as they try to amend the bill with the new deal on jobless benefits. Manchin is NOT yet sold, per a senator. He’s weighing whether to support the amendment, which would require 51 votes in the 50-50 Senate

A lot going on right now but upshot is that unemployment benefits in the Biden bill are at risk of being significantly pared back sometime in the next several hours

The underlying relief bill would extend jobless benefits at $400 per week through August. But it does not have the tax free provision. The concern over Manchin is why action is now stalled in the Senate.

GOP leaders are urging their colleagues to fall in line behind Rob Portman’s alternative jobless benefits extension, arguing that doing so could help pare back - or potentially scuttle - the overall relief bill, according to GOP sources

There are several members who are philosophically opposed to enhanced jobless benefits. But GOP leaders are trying to impress upon them that backing $300 a week could upset the delicate coalition between progressives and moderates — and throw a wrench into Democratic efforts

9. How much money did the DNC pump into Manchin's last election?

My guess is he is not right wing enough to win the WV Republican primary.

I don't know that I would have much patience with him on this. I get that he has to walk a tightrope on some social issues. But this is something that helps his fellow West Virginians. No one is going to call him out or use this vote against him.

He's either doing this fuckery to lay the groundwork for a shopping list of demands, or .... Nah I got nothing else.

But one thing is for sure, this is not ideological from Manchin, the 400 a week would be a great help to WVs.

You're handing the Senate back to Mitch next year. Although you don't seem to show so much enthusiasm when it comes to voting against bills he allows to move forward.

We are officially in WTF territory on the Senate floor. The vote-a-rama has been stalled out for more than three hours. Dems don't yet have 50 for their most important amendment and Rs are trying to bring Manchin on board to Portman's unemployment trims.
