Sen. Hassan wouldn't answer when asked why she voted against raising wage

Sen. Maggie Hassan wouldn’t answer when I asked her why she voted against an effort to raise wage to $15. “I have long been supportive of increasing the minimum wage,” she said.

I asked her what was wrong with this one, and her aide interjected and said she’s late for a meeting

Hassan’s office sends me this statement from her. “People who work 40 hours a week should be able to get by and shouldn’t be living at or below poverty level. I’ve long supported raising the minimum wage to $12 an hour and I’m open to $15 an hour.

her voting record will say otherwise. Yeah, it would be a cold day before I donate again. I guess NH is more conservative than I think.

and people are really angry about her vote. She hasn't replied yet, but I'll keep checking to see what she has to say. I really like her and am very disappointed in her vote.

5. I don't get what these Democrats think they are getting for this vote

Support of small business owners back home? Appearing to be moderate to swing voters? I don't think they are coming off that way as support for this bill and the wage increase is strong across the board. What am I missing here?

as it required a 60 vote majority and no republican would vote for it. That makes it difficult to understand why any Democrat would vote against it. I've checked Maggie Hassan's Facebook page and she still has not replied to the outrage of her constituents there, but apparently she usually votes the same as Jeanne Shaheen who did explain her vote.

Shaheen has expressed concerns about Sanders’s proposal to slowly raise the minimum wage for workers who receive tips, such as servers and busboys, to $15 an hour, eventually getting rid of the special “tipped wage” altogether.

“I support the minimum wage increase but I’m concerned about including the tipped wage provision because of the current status of the restaurant industry. We’ve had so many closings,” she said, adding the industry is in “difficult straits.”

Chris Coon's no vote was a surprise as he is a very close ally of President Biden. I haven't heard his reason for his vote yet.

7. The federal minimum tip wage is $2.13 and has not been raised since 1991 - 30 years ago.

The federal minimum wage for waiters and waitresses, barbers, hair stylists, parking attendants and others is at $2.13 and has not been raised since 1991 – 30 years ago.

The proposal in this legislation would raise that tipped wage from $2.13 an hour to $14.95 over a seven year period – something which is desperately needed. - Sen. Sanders

The Tip Wage is included in the original 'The Fair Labor Standards Act' which gets amended with new legislation.

8. I was a waitress over thirty years ago

and I was making around $2.00 back then. Corporate restaurants took advantage of the low wage by having wait staff do the jobs of hourly employees like bus boys, prep cooks, and hosts. Hard to believe the labor they did and still do get for just $2.13 an hour.

9. 'now servers are responsible for enforcing new rules and protocols around social distance and masks'

At the same time, as restaurants re-open the CDC has declared restaurants as the most dangerous place to work, and now servers are responsible for enforcing new rules and protocols around social distancing and wearing a masks.

The restaurant industry has some of the highest rates of sexual harassment. In a workplace where 70% of the workers are women, and where they rely on their customers to determine their wages, women are often expected to withstand sexual harassment in order to get paid. In states, where the sub minimum wage has been eliminated, sexual harassment has been cut in half. -Sen. Sanders

Customers often have no idea how much the wait staff goes through. I still have anxiety dreams about waitressing to this day.
