... They are an extinct sub-species of humans. We also share a lot DNA with great apes, but 23andMe doesn't include that in their reports. I don't understand why Republicans are embracing Neanderthals as part of their heritage. We all share DNA with our ancestors. I still share hemoglobin DNA from 800 million year old invertebrates.

The first ancient Irish group of Ireland.
Many thousands of years ago.
So my guess is that is why we have a higher than normal Neanderthal DNA.

(47,282 posts)My results show 93% Irish and British. I remember a mention of Doggerland awhile back, but can't find it now. It was through 23 and me. I have more Neanderthal than 95% of other participants. Is that about the same as yours?
Irish_Dem
(46,562 posts)The 99% Irish is unusual since I am supposed to be half Irish, Irish grandparents.
But DNA is randomly assigned and I just got a whole lot of Irish DNA from my Irish father.
PatSeg
(47,282 posts)It wasn't until recent years that I was able to trace my father's family and I found a lot of Irish on his family tree.
The 23 and Me reports are far more detailed than they used to be. They even show the regions in England and Ireland where my more recent ancestors were from. I hadn't checked that in awhile. It's fascinating as there are often new things to discover.
I guess it is no wonder that I am so drawn to British history. I binge-watched four or five documentaries last week.

(46,562 posts)now because so many people are DNA testing.
My Irish grandparents were born in County Mayo, and the male line has been in that area according to the DNA findings for thousands of years. My brother has done extensive YDNA testing that took the paternal line back 10,000 years to County Mayo. Only a small percentage of Irish males have this particular line, it is rare.
Most of the current Irish came to Ireland much later.
I love anything British/Irish in terms of TV, movies and books.

(47,282 posts)I definitely am an Anglophile. I am always looking for a new British TV show to binge-watch. When there is none, I'll rewatch an older one. Movies and literature as well.

(46,562 posts)Masterpiece Theater has always been one of my favorite shows.
I mainly read British mysteries, same with TV.
I have read Pride and Prejudice more times than I can count.
Yes it really is in our DNA.
PatSeg
(47,282 posts)and no one does mysteries better than the British.
The odds are our ancestors have crossed paths, probably more than once.
And I love Stout or most any kind of British or Irish beer. Don't drink it as much as I used to though, as it doesn't agree with me too much these days.

Yes the Brits are the best mystery writers.
I love beer, but I don't drink, so I get non alcoholic beer.
It is good for the bones they say!

(102,138 posts)In fact, there is some evidence that those with some shared genes with Neanderthals may well have been conferred COVID-19 resistance.
I did ancestry.com, but don't think they are testing or at least reporting out Neanderthal comparison findings.

If Republicans want to self identify as Neanderthals, I have no problem with that. Personally, I commonly refer to Republicans as "knuckle draggers" which is less scientific, and it is one of the most polite terms I use to define them. I would be more accurate to refer to them as sloths, or leaches, but some terms just give better imagery than others. Tell me that you can't visualize Mitch McConnell as stooped over, shuffling along, with a stupid look, with his knuckles dragging the dirt, being followed by his whole Republican cult.
Search our heritage back far enough and you will find a single celled, accidental mixture of chemicals that through some accident figured out how to replicate. put enough stuff in a jar and shake it long enough and odd things can emerge. I am certainly neither proud of nor ashamed of my previous bipedal or quadruped ancestors.
It is like Popeye said, "I yam what I yam, and that's all that I yam."
