I don't know you nearly well enough to presume to understand why you are considering "voting Republican" and possibly giving them the wedge they need to scuttle much of the Biden agenda. So, instead of talking like I know what's going on between your ears, let me just tell you how things look from where I sit.
Since you seem to favor "plain talk", I think you'll understand me when I say that your newfound "fame" as the linchpin in th he Democratic Senate seems to have you "swoll up like a poisoned pup"; you are brim-full of yourself and you just can't seem to resist the chance to strut "like a bantie rooster" as you grant audiences to Chuck Schumer and take calls from the President of the United States. You find yourself, for now, not just one of fifty but THE one who van determine whether the other 49 really count.
But, Senator, "this, too, shall pass".
If you are not careful, sir, the only thing the American people will remember about you will be that you killed timely covid relief that could have prevented the 2021 covid resurgence that killed additional thousands. People will not say "Joe was frugal with our tax money". They are likely to say "Joe is why _________ died before his/her time".
When you "go the way of all flesh", the first line of your newspaper obituaries will read "Joe Manchin, the West Virginia senator who blocked aid to desperate Americans during the deadly Corona virus pandemic of 2021-----" And, none of the rest will matter.
Like I said, that's just how it looks from where I sit, but know this: I ain't sittin' by here by my lonesome.
Seriously,
Atticus.

(4,180 posts)He doesn't give two shits about being blamed for people dying or his reputation after he's gone. He's getting lots of money and attention right now. He has no soul or morality to appeal to.

(9,090 posts)the rw radio monopoly starts falling apart and those fucking dittoheads who enable and intimidate him will soon be gone
the gop is fucked without limbaugh to lead the 1500 radio station messaging monster that has been destroying democracy for the last 30 years
as rw radio falls apart the global warming denying pro -coal constituency will fall apart and guys like manchin will have no leverage.
and if he goes to the GOP he'll be joining a party with super minorities for many years.

(22,462 posts)the filibuster. I sent him a letter a couple days ago and just got a WV address to use for his email.
I just accused him of getting money for blocking the vote - which I still think is a big possibility. Same with Sinema but I think if one of them changed their minds the other would too.

(162 posts)... if they could convince him to support "reforming" the filibuster - return it to it's 'Mr Smith goes to Washington' ideal, make them actually stand up and talk for hours/days instead of just raising their hand and saying 'I filibuster this bill'.

(620 posts)I have an equal amount of distaste of what I have often called a Dempublican. However, West Virginia is so Red, and yet we have a democratic Senator. People talk about primarying him, there are no viable Democrats in the state that stand a chance to defeat him.
Wish there was. We elected a governor that ran as a democrat then changed his party to GQP right after the election. We are walking on thin ice here. As much as we loath Manchin, he IS STILL A DEMOCRAT.

(19,187 posts)he'd act like one, not some part-time Democrat, part-time republican, full time egomaniac.

(2,825 posts)Someone that will tell the West Virginians that they've been played and how. It's really that simple. Joe Manchin is not the be all, end all with West Virginia. It's time to give Manchin more time to count his free money than it's time for him to get more free money to count.

(12,640 posts)We are from different states, and we look down on them and their traditions and families.
So they believe, so their churches and mine bosses and greedy business scammers tell them. And they're dealing with staggering unemployment/underemployment, opioid addiction, and an aging population that needs help.
So a significant number have been conned into being perpetual victims. They aren't going to listen to progressives, especially since Mitch Mcconnell and Paul Ryan were able to hamstring pretty much any Democratic program developed to help them during the Obama years.
But they didn't see the GOP doing this to them. They saw it as the man in charge -Obama - ignoring them and their problems.

(21,102 posts)West Virginians are worthy of clean air, clean water and clean jobs. Their families are great. Their traditions are great. They need help in the opioid addiction, and as you also stated, their aging population needs help.
Their exact cure is what we have to offer.
The same is true with many states. What's weird to me is that Manchin is blocking the very things that could show the people of WV that the Democrats are their friends, and when the government comes to help, it really does. This could help him win re-election. His opposition to a bill that the vast majority of Americans support is a loser for him, for the Democrats, and for the nation.
Manchin is perpetuating the cycle you are talking about. Because of him WV and the nation gets redder.

(62 posts)A state that Trump won by nearly 40 points?
At a time in which the democrats hold the slimmest of majorities possible, a VP tie breaker for controlling the executive branch?
This is the best idea we can come up with? Like, this ones the ticket? This will be the winner and the key to pushing through all things progressive? This is the one?
