(7,510 posts)The Index Librorum Prohibitorum ("List of Prohibited Books" was a list of publications deemed heretical or contrary to morality by the Sacred Congregation of the Index (a former Dicastery of the Roman Curia), and Catholics were forbidden to read them without permission.[1]
There were attempts to censor individual books before the sixteenth century, notably the ninth-century Decretum Glasianum, but none of these were either official or widespread.[2] In 1559, Pope Paul IV promulgated the Pauline Index. While it has been described by some as "the turning-point for the freedom of enquiry in the Catholic world", the effects of the Index were minimal and it was largely ignored.[3] After less than a year, it was replaced by the Tridentine Index which relaxed aspects of the Pauline Index that had been criticized and had prevented its acceptance.[1] The 20th and final edition appeared in 1948, and the Index was formally abolished on 14 June 1966 by Pope Paul VI.[4][5]

(58,590 posts)Prohibiting things from outside the tribal culture is pretty much the normal human condition.
Almost by definition, having a defined "culture" means excluding, to some extent, things outside of the accepted norms. How fiercely they prohibit the outside influence is a defining trait of how open that culture is.

(1,613 posts)For all eternity, human tribes have rejected anything they distain or fear from an emotional perspective.
The modern Scientific Method provides the means to focus on facts and evidence - and eliminating fear and emotion.
When folks reject science, they only naturally devolve back to a tribal defence posture - hate and fear of the unknown.
