The Trump version was never "for the people" from any tangible or measurable perspective. It wasn't about addressing their financial or societal needs, his rhetoric notwithstanding. It was all about making them believe that they're better than everyone else. They're "patriots" or "true Americans", blah, blah.

It's not economic populism. It's making them feel superior to everyone else -- the real Americans, the real patriots, the real government, blah, blah. Everyone else is the enemy.
