Joe: Native American communities have been hit hard by COVID-19. But thanks to the Indian Health Ser

President Biden
@POTUS

United States government official
Native American communities have been hit hard by COVID-19. But thanks to the Indian Health Service and strong partnerships with Tribal governments, organizations, and urban Indian groups, more than 500,000 vaccines have already been administered with more on the way.

even though I am not NA but do live in an IHS area where they are my GP. Others in the county where I live (Humboldt far north coast California)have experienced difficulty in getting vaccine appointments.

My experience:

I received the 1st shot of Moderna at the Indian Health Service clinic

about 2 miles from my home last Wednesday.

On a local (basically three rural counties) news blog there is a daily covid thread and I made the following post several days ago. People dependent on the county are having trouble scheduling shots even when of high priority and the appointments can be very inconvenient.

>>Props to the Indian Health Service out here in the hinterlands. Asked me 6 weeks ago, if I wanted a vaccine when available and I said yes. Then was called and asked again more formally and was scheduled for a vaccine. Then was called moving up the appointment, January 27 10 AM.

I was only one in the parking lot at time of my appointment. One is taken in the door after a temperature check and given a questionnaire about allergies and a disclosure statement to sign with items like the vaccine is not yet FDA approved. Then one is taken to a treatment room for the shot. After the shot one goes back into the waiting room for a 15 minute waiting period to see if any unfavorable reactions. The doctor sat with me and went over a several page Fact Sheet. Also one is given a cv19 card with treatment record and the time and date of the 2nd shot four weeks in the future.

Easy and convenient as huckleberry pie in the old days.

Vaccine is distributed direct to IHS and not through the county or State to my understanding.

BTW I am not Native American.

Received the 2nd Moderna shot today at 1:15 PM PST

in the parking lot of IHS (Indian Health Service) Clinic about 2 miles from my home.

What was different is got a call changing appointment from 10 AM to the 1:15 PM slot and that the Clinic was experimenting with drive through vaccination. Like my 1st shot, people were in 15 minute time slots: meet with doctor, review material, sign a release; get shot; and wait 15 minutes for overt bad reactions and to get covid card obtained at first shot updated. Got another copy of COVID19 Fact Sheet plus material on reactions plus diet supplements and treatment should get various after effects and when to call 911 / go to ER.

Very straightforward and professional. Others in Humboldt county have struggled obtaining vaccines but IHS is federally distributed and not through county and state. I am fortunate to be in IHS service territory and the Clinic is my primary provider.

BTW not NA but multigenerational local, age 68, have been through chemo and cancer surgeries (not locally) beginning in 2018.
