I think "encourage" is the wrong term to use. I either did what I was told or I was beaten and grounded. Grounding included daily prayer sessions with my parents and pastor, where I was expected to beg god for mercy on my worthless soul and do penance in the form of hard labor, for disrespecting the church and my parents.
Participating and/or refusing to participate will haunt some of these kids for the rest of their lives. I STILL cry when I think about some of the horrible, horrible things I was forced to say to women.
