Whilst Republican senators staggered off to sleep after a pointless all nighter for the covid relief bill, Schummer briefly had a 2/3rds majority and called cloture on Merrick Garland!. Debate is over! Vote to confirm is scheduled for next week. Needs simple majority. Hahaha!!!

(14,456 posts)As Republicans say: governing is hard! And they've gotten soft.
They're only skill is propaganda, and they're only advantage is when they have large numbers in elected office so they can lazily put their collective "No" into practice.

(12,286 posts)If the republicans insist on a 60 vote threshold to move anything forward then they better be willing to live in the senate chambers 24/7
Because Schumer is willing to play that game too.

(167,153 posts)"legislative session" and "executive session" and started having the clerk read the calendar items, including a stack of nominees (I think in Parliamentary parlance, their names assumed to have been read into the record) - and he explicitly mentioned Garland (although before mention of him, he mentioned the nominee to head up the EPA). And he was actually calling for yays and nays with no one there and then dispensing with the quorum.
Right then and there I sat silent wondering if he was about to pull a unanimous consent request to confirm every one by unanimous consent since the entire chamber emptied out except the staff and Presiding Officer (wasn't sure who that was up there), but alas!

(3,533 posts)But I was under the impression that cabinet positions, along with Federal judges (circuit & appellate) were exempted from the filibuster back when Harry Reid was majority leader, due to Moscow Mitch McConnell's (R-Yertle the Turtle) obstructionism at the time. 🤷♂️
