as an electoral tactic, but it's seemingly still almost all local candidates who are not favored by local crime cartels.

Most of the murdered are PRI pols. That's the old sorta centrist conservative party that began as socialist at the time of the revolution but settled in to hold power for the next several decades. Ergo, so many PRI in locals offices. PRI lost national power to Obrador's new "centrist left" nationalist party (a competitive sucker shooting up from the PRI roots ) after a long history of corruption scandals.

For sure it could be worse. Poor people.
